The NHS is already one of the biggest perpetrators of anti-trans violence in the UK. This new guidance, which refers to trans people using slurs, demands that we be segregated and abused. I’ve said it before: senior NHS managers must be sacked and punished for what they’ve done to us.

In other words, the presence of a strategic opponent pushed people to produce very strong random behavior — in many cases, indistinguishable from uniform randomness. This is surprising, and contrary to what we might expect given the persistent failures in human randomization!

Which I think people would look at and see, oh, this person put effort into it, they did a real performance, and not apply AI ethical thinking to it. But it still is head-scratchy to me because that still *would* be me doing this in lieu of hiring one or more voice actors. I crossed *a* stated line.

Then there's all the people who object to AI voices on labor grounds, that it's putting VAs out of work. At least one person replied with the ethical redline "if you can tell it's synthesized, it's okay", which is a redline that makes *sense* to me at least (synth does not *replace* a voice actor)

A puzzle I made. Some words and numbers are connected by different-color arrows. If you need an accessible version, DM/reply and I'll see what I can do!

similar to NaN payloads they should let you stuff ~6 instruction bytes into a function pointer FExxxxxx xxxxxxx0. cpu with native support would execute it in the call opcode. else the kernel can make up a page full of repeats on access.

For centuries, scientists have thought of the brain as a single, unified organ. But new research led by Stanford Medicine reveals that what we call the brain is two distinct organs that evolved independently over hundreds of millions of years. med.stanford.edu/news/all-new...

as xkeeper explained, it’s more complicated than “just plagiarism” because information can be discovered independently with no way to prove it but I don’t think it’s a principled position to say “plagiarism is no big deal when it happens to people I don’t like”

In ~2007 when coding the ambient lighting of Splinter Cell, I had the idea of storing dynamic SH probes in Voronoi cells, where a) dynamic objects could walk/lerp the face graph, and b) static meshes "palettised" probes per vertex and lerped to give Realtime GI. It never shipped but look how pretty!

Big fan of the general recomp "devs" going "recomp means we can improve the games!" and "no more emulation!", and then you see those automated recomps that: 1. Emulate the PS1 CPU anyway and dump JIT'ted code on runtime (like emus) 3. Ship game patches instead of making in-source changes (like emus)

What if our ears were like our eyes, and only had three (types of) receptors? Interestingly speech is still more or less intelligible, but not much else to me this shows how much more discriminating of frequencies our hearing is than our vision. Of course our vision has much more spatial resolution

that's my jam
a shell pipeline in a terminal compiling a regex, where the regex was written with syntax that would be pathological when executed backtracking style. stages of the pipeline show:
1. constructing an NFA from the regex (it goes through an AST first of course, but we don't see that). the NFA here contains loops within loops, where the exit from the loop is ambiguous: given an input of 'b' we could be iterating around an inner or an outer loop, but we don't know which until there's a following character 'a' or not.
2. NFA -> minimal DFA. this is where the ambiguity is resolved, and every state has outgoing edges that are deterministic
3. the same DFA output to a text format
4. the text format piped into the same tool, a command line interface for libfsm, showing a constructed AST
5. the AST rendered out to pcre regex syntax. the end result here now contains just one loop, with the contents rearranged such that it wouldn't be pathological given a backtracking implementation
