Mitochondrial l-2-hydroxyglutarate is a physiological signalling metabolite - Nature
l-2-Hydroxyglutarate is identified as a legitimate physiological signalling metabolite, and control of its levels is essential for postnatal growth and survival and correct renal development and function.

Very happy to share our new paper. Together with our wonderful collaborators, we found that L-2-HG, a metabolite often viewed as “toxic,” also has an essential physiological function in mice. www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Metformin inhibits mitochondrial complex I in intestinal epithelium to promote glycaemic control
Nature Metabolism, Published online: 08 May 2026; doi:10.1038/s42255-026-01530-yMetformin is shown to exert its glucose-lowering and additional clinical effects through inhibition of mitochondrial complex I in the intestinal epithelium in mice.

Mitochondrial activity tunes nociceptor resilience to excitotoxicity
Excitation enables neuronal function; however, overexcitation and calcium overload can be deadly. This study reveals a cellular resilience program in which reduced expression of electron transport chain components protects against excitotoxic death, as seen in pain-sensing primary afferent neurons (nociceptors).

It’s been a tough few weeks. My 10yo daughter was diagnosed with a very rare, aggressive cancer called interdigitating dendritic cell sarcoma (IDCS). I’m reaching out to identify clinicians/patients who have encountered pediatric IDCS or other (non-LCH) dendritic or histiocytic sarcomas cases.

Our lab's latest study, spearheaded by a fantastic colleague, Colleen, reveals that the blood glucose-lowering effect of metformin requires the inhibition of mitochondrial ETC complex I. www.science.org/doi/10.1126/.... An insightful focus by Prof. Doug Green: bit.ly/41Hc4fX
