My absolutely bonkers Marvel or DC Comics business plan; take a couple hundred million of that movie money or that CEO money and make all digital/webcomics free. 100% subsidized. Pay the best writers, artists, and creators. Spare no expense. Play the long game and get everyone hooked forever.

That library you built up with Marvel will now be over with a Webtoon but I’m sure the Terms of Service will explain what happens in this or that unforeseen eventuality. Good luck!

I’m sure Marvel did the math for the licensing deal vs. the staff, production, and maintenance costs to conclude that licensing is more profitable.

This is kind of an incredible move. They’re getting rid of their own app and licensing out the entire business to Webtoon. www.marvel.com/unlimited?sr...

That’s so.
A panel from an old Popeye comic strip.

Popeye says, “A comic artist ain’t no different than you or me or anybody except he knows how to draw pictures and is crazy in the head.”

A man replies, “Yeah, that’s so.”

Absolutely bonkers that this existed at all let alone that it came directly from the mind of the president/publisher.

Back when I was running DC Creative Services, which included custom publishing, portfolio review, and ZUDA, we used to have people try to try to work around the system all the time; interrupt meetings, social events, snide “jokes” about this or that person. It’s amazing people think that works.

Yeah, in think we’re on the same page there. DRM and the various exclusivity requirements were notbonky short sighted by publishers but just brutal for creators and readers alike.
010
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
Absolutely. And what you said about creators paying the passion tax while publishers scaled back eh at they offered to those creators is real!
010
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
And it’s interesting that given the chance to start from scratch, so to speak, the comics that were created specifically for digital were successful! Webcomics, the “turbo media” stuff, Marvel’s Dot Comics, Infinite Comics, ZUDA, webtoons, etc, etc.
110
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
I think this is largely true. Speaking about print-to-digital distribution only, I recall that at the time there weren’t quite as many conversations about how to adapt the technology to serve the comics as there were about how to adapt the comics to serve the technology. The product had to change.
110
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
Yeah, I think the same. I posted a few follow ups but basically the set up one company, with one technology, went all in, and it all went to shit. And now like 20 years later they trying to rebuild the sand game. Meanwhile comics as an art form has adapted wildly!
100
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
And when that digital distribution system collapsed, as it was doomed to do, the whole house of cards crashed. And now, literally decades later, with no real technological progress to show for it, comics (the art form) has continued to grow and adapt, leaving the publishers playing catch-up.
000
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
Further, by investing 100% in that one option, readers had little or no choice. They created a digital distribution monopoloy, based on a sub-par product, that mirrored the print distribution monopoly with the exception with print you actually owned the product you bought.
000
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
It seemed like easy money, and it probably was with the price being the same, but it was really just a boondoggle, like Motion Comics, that tried to sell you the idea that what you REALLY wanted was not the comic, as it was originally conceived and created, but a different experience entirely.
210
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 28/08/2026
I’ve worked in comics for a long time. So this is with the benefit of hindsight, but I think comic book publishers going all-in on optimizing print-to-digital distribution for phones, with some sort of panel view, was a massive strategic mistake that ultimately set the publishers back by years.

But with Doom, whatever his story might be, the (re)introduction of the X-Men, and whatever else happens, we’re expected to care simply because it exists, or because it’s next, or for the big names attached to it. It’s storytelling by spectacle, as if you’re just entitled to an audience.

Perazza @ronperazza.com · 16/08/2026
Doomsday looks boring. Thanos’ story worked as an overarching threat because it was seeded into other stories, slowly revealed, until became THE story, in a classic Levitz Paradigm way, with A, B, & C plots overlapping. It’s one of the best methods of serialized superhero comic book storytelling!

The MCU has fallen into the same trap as the comics. It’s made entirely for super fans. Every emotional hook requires that you’ve immersed yourself in decades of lore. The meaning comes from being able to go “Ah ha! I know that!” at every clip. And the big kicker is a bearded guy from a decade ago.

230
Perazza @ronperazza.com · 10/07/2026
Also, also! The best pitches usually include a stand-alone story, with a solid beginning, middle, and end. It starts and ends firmly within the status quo, and can slot easily into existing continuity. That is the world they live in. Can you make that engaging and interesting? That’s the job. 3/3
