++ Linking the unity of consciousness to the unity of metabolism Also, @anilseth.bsky.social makes an error by relating thermodynamic free energy to informational free energy (not a physical quantity). An organism imports (not minimizes) free energy in order to survive. The opposite basically.

Letting kids play with the red button is dangerous. But it's not because kids are so much smarter than adults. The point is not to prevent AI to get "too smart", but to have strict barriers in place. An LLM did not figure out how to send requests over internet: an engineer implemented the feature.

The superposition of these two studies — both incredible — reflect a snapshot of "one big thing" systems neuroscience has yet to resolve. In mice: 1. Task-related signals are everywhere. 2. Absent large swaths of "everywhere," suprisingly sophisticated learning & behavior remains.

A critique of grant-based funding of research. Koppanyi, 1945. www.jstor.org/stable/40220...
The theories and ways of thinking of scientists are as diverse as
the world itself. How can we set up a court with the power to
pass on what is good and what is not good for science? It might
have the same effect as having a court of art, directing artists
to follow only the pet artistic theories of members of the board.
Although few people are aware of what every scientist knows,
science is as much an expression of the individual human being as
any of the arts.

Yes - LLMs are (technically) amazing, but those algorithms don't become people just because they have been tuned to produce sequences of symbols mimicking those produced by people. Alphafold can fold proteins, but actually it's not a ribosome.

Anticipating a signal without a model of the signal. It's in the physics literature (Voss): arxiv.org/pdf/1508.01088 It's a simple (linear!) dynamical system dy/dt entrained by an input x(t). Surprisingly, it relaxes to y(t) = a*x(t+d) for some delay d.
Anticipatory relaxation dynamics (ARD) for a smoothed random signal. a) Section of the signal to be predicted, x, and the predicted ARD signal, y. The rescaled signal λy, with λ a scaling factor, is shown, too.

One issue with computespeak is the constant confusion between capacity and mechanism, explanans and explanandum. Sometimes computing just means solving a problem, sometimes it's a particular way of solving a problem. Sometimes to represent is just to know, sometimes it's to encode.
