After shaking my head at old people who said "things were better when I was a kid" all my life, and knowing how common it is for a culture to regard the past as a Golden Age, it is pretty damn embarrassing that I now have to say things were better when I was a kid, those times a virtual Golden Age.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

CPI isn't a big deal unless you're one of those rare people who purchases medical care, vehicles, computers/software, or toys. Might also be a problem for people who earn money instead of already having money, but those people should really try having money instead.
By Chris Anstey, Senior Editor

Thanks for joining us today. Here are key takeaways from the September CPI report:
The headline CPI jumped by 0.6% compared with August, as expected by economists, and 3.7% on a year-on-year basis, marking an acceleration from 3.4% the previous month. More than half the monthly increase came from gasoline, which soared 9.1%.
The core CPI, stripping out food and energy, rose 0.3% on the month, more than all but 11 of the 73 economists in Bloomberg’s survey had anticipated. The annual rate accelerated to 2.6%, the fastest pace since June. Increases were broad based, including recreation and used vehicles, airfares and medical care.
Outsize gains in some categories pointed to evidence of both the AI effect and impact from tariffs. On a year-on-year basis, computers and software prices saw record increases, at 9.7% and 28.4% respectively. Toys, up an annual 6.6%, jumped the most since 1988.
Inflation continues to wallop workers. Today’s numbers mean real average hourly earnings contracted by 0.7% last month, the most since May. Real earnings have been shrinking for six straight months now, the longest string since the 2021-23 cost-of-living surge.
The odds of an interest-rate hike by the Federal Reserve in two weeks soared after the release, with Treasuries plunging, stocks sliding and the dollar rising. Two-year yields were up about 12 basis points as of 9:32 a.m. in New York, the S&P 500 opened down 0.4% and the Bloomberg Dollar Spot Index hit its highest since May 2025.
