That's true about the leaves but there's also the rare Red Nightshade, Solanum villosum, which is similar. Just happen to be a couple of stray plants in the Botanic Gardens here in Cambridge at the moment.

The scars of a fire in 1486 are still visible inside St Peter’s Church, Wolferton, Norfolk. The medieval stone arches and pillars remain reddened by the heat. Almost 400 years later, the future King Edward VII paid for the church’s restoration in 1886. #Wolferton #Norfolk #AerialPhotography

I love Wych Elm, Ulmus glabra. Sometimes its leaves look Lothlorien; sometimes Barad Dur. They are always rough and leathery. #Suffolk #native #trees

Plant paternity is tricky business. Eucalyptus, for eg, can reproduce with plants from related but different species to create successful seedlings, creating hybrids. Read about how researchers have been investigating plant parental histories. Read here: buff.ly/2G1VUjg
Eucalyptus accedens shown in two panels: left, a mature gum tree with pale, patchy trunk standing in a dry field under clear blue sky; right, close-up of a twig with clusters of green, rounded buds/fruits and lance-shaped leaves.

What does the health of the soil beneath our feet have to do with the price of food on our supermarket shelves? Quite a lot, actually, writes Martin Lines. After a summer of extreme drought, the case for farming that works with nature has rarely been stronger.
