A patch of nettles, brambles and dock in a sunny corner of Abbey Gardens, Waltham Abbey produced an adult Blue Shieldbug, two nymphs of Vernal Shieldbug and 23 Southern Green Shieldbug nymphs today 5th October, with Dock Bug and Hairy Shieldbug alongside (no photo). #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Sciocoris sideritidis has spread from its known site in Purfleet, Essex, half a mile to the wildlife garden and car park of RSPB Rainham Marshes TQ5478. I found 3 specimens here on 2 October. #Shieldbugs @britishbugs.bsky.social @rockwolf74.bsky.social

Rhyzobius forestieri beaten from oak at Blo' Norton, Norfolk on Thursday. Been a while since I've seen one of these. Pretty big for one of the 'inconspicuous' species.
A rather round looking black beetle covered in dense, short white hairs on a white insect net. A tiny black beetle is below it, upside down on the net.The black beetle on the tip of a pink human finger. The beetle is upside down to show that the visible abdominal segments are an orangey colour while the rest of the beetle is black.The black ladybird beetle in the palm of someone's hand, alongside a 7 Spot Ladybird to show how big/small it is.

Found two Clouded Yellows (Colias croceus) in a meadow in Nazeing, Essex on 21st September, one typical and one pale form helice. Had fun trying to get some upper shots of the helice form, but as usual only a few blurry photos were the result. #EssexWildlife #UKButterflies

I have a feeling this is a Dusky Ladybird, but not sure I can clinch it from the photos I managed. From a recent visit to Rainham Marshes. There were several, mostly on White Bryony. 1.8-2mm long. This one’s femora were black with orange right at the tip.

Standing by a busy road near Waltham Abbey, Essex I recorded 2 adults and one nymph of Striped Shieldbug on this Hemlock seedhead. Back home looking at the photo on my laptop and a third adult and at least 9 early instar nymphs became apparent. The tiny nymphs can be hard to spot in the field.

Still finding new populations of Striped Shieldbugs (Graphosoma italicum) around the periphery of Waltham Abbey this week, even small patches of Hemlock and Hogweed mostly have a few on them. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

A confusing array of bug nymphs at Purfleet on Sunday 6th Sept. The attractive stripy and mottled ones are probably a Nysius species, but I can find no match for two distinctive individuals, black with a white collar and pale horseshoe mark on abdomen. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs

Found seven Sciocoris sideritidis (a sandrunner species) at its known site at Purfleet, Essex, along the coastal path opposite the train station today 6th September. Five swept from dry grassland, whilst two were tapped from nearby shrubs. #EssexWildlife #UKBugs
