NB: The UK govt owns the Student Loans Company, via which it directly funds most home students’ university places. Framing graduates as indebted to this ‘company’ for the rest of their working lives is an accounting trick that both punishes the pursuit of education and undermines its public value.

It has been refreshingly obvious from day one of @zackpolanski.bsky.social’s leadership of @greenparty.org.uk that he rejects the failed economic dogma that has only driven (and can only continue to drive) social and ecological breakdown. The real fantasy is that we can carry on with the status quo.

Each time Will Beaman writes a new essay, I somehow always find the time to read it because they're just that good. Here's the premise of this one: Design can either attempt to insinuate the inevitability of a choice or openly invite contestation—and one is certainly more democratic than the other.

It is time to tell new stories about (and with) money, ones that reject exclusionary violence and instead celebrate our collective capacities and creative potential, stories with room for everyone. It is time to give credit where credit’s due.
A poster with a rainbow border and text that reads:

Tell new stories!

The standard (or 'straight') story of money tells us that:
• Money is scarce - there is not enough to go round
• Responsible budgeting means letting marginalised people suffer (sorry)
• An inclusive society is unaffordable - we have to leave some people out

We say a better story is possible:
• Money has limitless creative potential - we can build a society with space for everyone
• Money is queer - we can take all our beautiful difference into account
• Money is credit - let's give credit where credit's due

Underneath the text are logos for WHERE

The UK’s present xenophobic tensions - from flag displays to anti-immigration protests - rely on a logic of scarcity: “there’s not enough to go around.” The same thinking fuels attacks on refugees, disabled people, LGBTQIA+ communities, and benefit claimants. But what if the premise is wrong? 🧵1/6
