Unsurprisingly, this AI cartoon detaches Keynes's thoughts about technology from his broader support for robust fiscal policy and a public option for work. That explains why it ended up in the NY Times, of course.

Receivership is usually narrated as a failure inside the distressed entity. The hospital, utility, transit, etc, has become insolvent and therefore must be degraded so that it can once again satisfy outside finance. What if the failure is instead in the financial architecture itself? What then?

The broad hegemony of the "taxpayer money" paradigm will continue to make the "America First" grammar intuitive enough that it circulates in the Democratic Party mostly undetected, even if it *feels* reactionary in a way that's hard to place.

I think the midterms will be great news overall, but the Democratic Party will get bigger and stranger with such a weakened GOP. What will we do when the far right starts promoting "America First" Democrats? It will reorganize today's "left vs. moderate" antagonism around who sees it happening.

How could we measure + valuate the public's collective capacity to meet a public need? My answer: by developing a robust program for assessing both public capacities and public needs—along with a new system of accounting for public capacities + needs to match.

Take, once again, the example of a jobs-guarantee. Here, the public's financial capacity to fulfill this commitment could be defined as the overlap between— • The sum of the many kinds of labor its residents are willing to do; and • The many kinds of labor the government finds publicly valuable.

Applying this definition of public financial capacity would, in turn, require the government to conduct at least 2 kinds of ambitious assessments: 1️⃣ An assessment of the labor capacities of each individual who claims the government's job-guarantee; and 2️⃣ An assessment of the public's labor needs.

Jobs are capacities, not just costs. The fact that private banks hold reserves as a special kind of central bank asset to match deposits as their liabilities makes me think maybe some other asset layer should be created so that e.g. payroll is not one-sidedly represented as a liability.
