Records come and records go. But this is one for the ages. The preliminary Nino 3.4 sea-surface temperature anomaly is now at a record 3.23°C above the 1991-2020 baseline. This crushes the previous daily record set in 1982 by over 1.14°C. The Climate 8-ball is looking up.

Wildfire isn’t erasing forests. We are. We’ve altered climate, fuels, vegetation, and fire regimes until fires push ecosystems across ecological thresholds. Forests become shrublands. Shrublands become annual grasslands. Diverse plant communities become near-monocultures.

What I expect media wise for the coming months: - More news about declining glaciers (because we still have some) - Fewer news about insects populations and corals (because, you know..) Note: Can you still find news about global temperatures, now that we have passed 1.5°C? We're at >1.71°C.

Dynamic instability of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin Ice Sheet, East Antarctica
Nature Reviews Earth & Environment, Published online: 30 September 2026; doi:10.1038/s43017-026-00827-6The Wilkes Subglacial Basin is a marine-based sector of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet that is vulnerable to ocean-forced melting and climate warming. This Review assesses changes in ice-sheet extent in the Wilkes Subglacial Basin under past and projected warming and notes large uncertainties in temperature-related and climate-related thresholds for its major retreat.
