This month's reviews are, in my opinion, a spectacular advertisement for Berlin's lit culture: an Irish writer who writes beautifully about home, a Berlin-based Arabic publisher and translator, and the city's pull on writers from around the world.

As anyone who knows me is tired of hearing, I am very good at guessing who will win the Nobel prize. This year, though, I needed a bit of inspiration, and I wrote about it for The Auflauf's new SCENE series:

Ruth Rehmann’s 1959 novel Illusions—overlooked (not just) in the Anglosphere—has been restored "to its modernist glory" in a new translation by Rob Madole. observer.co.uk/culture/book... www.theauflauf.com/p/rob-madole...

My favorite Auflauf interview of the year about my favorite book of the year. Had a blast talking about modernism, architecture, and baffling mid-century parenting with @robmadole.bsky.social:

Ruth Rehmann, German literature's lost illusionist
Inside a gleaming office building four workers gather their belongings and prepare to leave the self-contained kingdom to which they pledge fealty. One window cleaner, a circus worker on sabbatical, cavorts in the air as he performs his labour. He is uniquely capable of viewing these employees, whose dichotomous dual existences – the will to duty and the allure of individualism – battle against each other. From 1947 until 1967, German authors began to gather annually to embark on the rearticulation of what literature might look like after the Second World War. Founded by Hans Werner Richter, Group 47 held discussions and readings of new work, voting for the best example. Although the group’s influence was profound, producing Nobel winners Günter Grass and Peter Handke, its women writers were not accorded their due notice. As a result, Illusions, the debut novel by Ruth Rehmann (1922-2016), has been largely forgotten. Faber’s choice to reissue this beguiling work is important not only to celebrate a singular and neglected author, but also because Illusions is brutally insightful on matters that haunt western society now as they did postwar. Here, Rehmann grapples on the most ambitious scale with what compels the human heart toward...

This Women in Translation Month, very happy to be working at The Auflauf, where it's WITM every month: in our first 6 months we've run reviews of Franck, Maci, Mehr, Reimann; original translated fiction by Sylvia Krupicka; and an interview with Herta Müller's latest translator:

My novel is coming out in paperback soon with this handsome new cover! If you've been thinking of picking up a copy, please do me a solid and consider putting in a preorder for £10.44, which I understand is roughly the price of a pint in London. Thank you! uk.bookshop.org/p/books/poor...

“With its social breadth and historical depth, The Effingers casts nazism not as a fairytale triumph of evil over good but rather through [an] often incoherent mixture of desires, ideas and material conditions ... Tergit prefers detail to abstraction – and details resist grand explanations.”
