It just boggles my mind that an American state has been in North Korean missile range since the late 90s, with very public reminders, and no one treats it like a big deal except that increasing missile range might “threaten the US mainland.” Great, awesome. We’re definitely not treated as a colony.

CALIFORNIA: Can’t believe people are casually talking about us hypothetically getting nuked by Iran. So upsetting. HAWAII: … CA: It’s like, crazy right? Can you imagine Americans not caring if you’re nuked? HI: [checks phone, turns off erroneous North Korean missile alert] CA: Wild brah. Wild.

I wish people understood that TV writers: 1. *Have* actually thought more about this than even the most die hard fan. 2. Are beholden to time, money, and owner constraints that fans will never be aware of. 3. Are extremely likely to already be aware of any critiques because (see 1) but (see 2)

So Trump 100% doesn’t know that San Diego is the homeport of the US Pacific Fleet, right? We’ve all internalized that, right? Like if Iran blew up San Diego it would be a massive military defeat in addition to a civilian catastrophe, right? We get that.

Fellow authors: how do you keep the constant flood of LLM-extruded scam e-mails (the ones where the robot consumed your book to regurgitate back its major themes, like a house cat presenting you with a coughed-up hairball) from absolutely destroying your soul?

I think what people miss in the “Nobody talks about GoT” conversation is that when people DID talk about GoT around the water cooler it was always about what was going to happen. It had a reality show feel as to who was going to live or die. Once we knew that, the interest largely dissipated.

Someone did an inflation adjustment fact check on this and it's like... Oh you're right, in that case spending a quarter-billion dollars on a senate seat is a steal.

This gets said constantly, but it worth reiterating: Games Workshop being bigger than fishing is important to shout about because you wouldn't know it from government talking points, which are rarely about anything creative or artistic. Growth won't involve fish or steel, it will involve goblins.

Campaign spending has gotten out of control. The GOP is spending more money to elect Ken Paxton in Texas ($250 million) than George W. Bush spent in both the presidential primary and general election in 2000. Think what a quarter billion could do in our communities—and it's just wasted on Ken.

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”
