50 years ago this November—a pair of paleoanthropologists found a skeleton that belonged to a 3.2 million year old hominin, which came to be nicknamed Lucy. In today’s episode, we discuss what Lucy has taught us in the last 50 years. Listen here 🎧: pod.link/73329284
A man excavating a skeleton out of sediment. Quote says: “I certainly thought that [Lucy] would be terribly important to the field of paleoanthropology. I had no idea that she would be the most famous skeleton found in the 20th century.”

Very late #VolcanoMonday but here you have a picture of Agua volcano, that I took in Antigua Guatemala back in February. This city will host the XV Central American Geological Congress later this week and as much as 200 to 300 geoscientists from the region will be there.
Agua, a large stratovolcano in the back of the scene, standing tall between some thin clouds. To the front, a somewhat luxurious neighborhood in Antigua Guatemala, with a lot of beautiful gardens and colonial style houses.

1.85 billion years ago, a massive meteorite struck near what is now Sudbury, Ontario. The resulting tsunami sent this stromatolite over 600 km across the ocean and deposited it near what is now Thunder Bay. So, that was a bad day for those microbes. #FossilFriday ⚒️

A digital drawing of a Homotherium latidens cub, based on a mummy that was found in Siberia. Just a sleepy little thing. It's also fluffy and looks soft (or it does, at least! I did my best). I tried to draw the head from the side just like in the paper to show the resemblance, and also show the unique shape of it's paws. The background is dark, with a few stars that form constellations. There is one little star on the head of the cub, that shines slightly brighter than the others.

Slabs like these are often sold as 'fossils' on eBay and such, but they are not actual fossils! These are manganese dendrites, which are mineral formations created by the crystallization of manganese oxides, forming tree or root-like patterns. They are an example of pseudofossils. ⚒️🧪

For #VolcanoMonday, have some views of Newberry Volcano and its spectacular obsidian lava flow. Very lucky to have visited this special place this last summer with some amazing volcanologists.
Photo of a landscape, taken from a high point. Looks over an incredible ancient lava flow which drops from right to left. In the distance, hills and lakes to the horizon. In the foreground one trees and a photographer.A view of the edge of an ancient obsidian lava flow. The flow front is very steep. It is several 10s of metres thick. The top is very rough looking, jagged spines of shiny black rocks stick up high above the surface. In the background is forested hillsides. A close up image of the top of the lava flow. The rock is black and very shiny, giving a glassy appearance. This is obsidian. Large spines of this rock stick up all over the lava flow surface. A close up of a piece of the obsidian lava flow. Black and grey colours swirl together in a beautiful pattern of fluid folds (flow banding).
