Can anyone who speaks Icelandic let me know whether there is a logic behind "opna" taking the accusative but "loka" taking the dative? Regarding a door, "ég opna hurðina" but "ég loka hurðinni". This is the kind of thing I'll fail to remember if there isn't a reason and it's just how things are 😂

Use of English or other generally accepted language is an AI indicator. I’m busy translating my current story into semaphore. It’ll basically be a flip book.

I made an account on W Social not realizing it was connected to Bluesky through the AT Protocol. Trying to decide if it makes sense to have both or if that’s confusing. Maybe both are needed for DMs within a platform? Anyone have thoughts to share on this?

A week in #Iceland I saw a few snow flurries, the roads were great, and the lowest temperature my car recorded was -2 C. Back in Southern California, had to chip ice off the 4WD and it was -4.5 C this morning.

Seeing some sights today.
Blue, almost translucent ice at the edge of a cold sea. More sea ice with waves crashing in the background. A triangular formation of blue-white ice jutting from the water. Blue-white ice on the water with snow-capped stark brown mountains behind.

Excited for #icelandnoir. Second year attending. Iceland crime fiction was my entry into Icelandic literature. Starting with Yrsa Sigurðardóttir (the first Freyja and Huldar to be precise), then reading Arnaldur and Ragnar and from there to newer (to me) writers in the same genre. But, more…

Legal claim against OpenAI for direct copyright infringement for ChatGPT's summary of works of fiction, as well as generating of outlines for potential sequels to such works, survives a motion to dismiss. No analysis of Fair Use at this point, since that defense isn't at issue. #copyright #ai

Dr Cecilia Payne. Important to Physics but didn't receive recognition for many years because she was a woman.
This is Cecilia Payne. She determined, as a doctoral student, that the sun was mostly H and He. Her advisor, Henry Russell, believed that the sun was obviously made from the same materials as the earth. He made her add a disclaimer to her thesis stating that she was almost certainly wrong. Later, when Russell realized she was right, he published his own paper. He credited her prior work but received scientific credit for the discovery himself for 40 years, until Payne was finally recognized.

Reading a book by Ragnar Jónasson. The characters, coming from Siglufjörður, stop at the gap between the tunnels from Siglufjörður to Ólafsfjörður. When I drove through there, I stopped and walked around in that same place because I really liked it. Fun to come across it in a book! This is near.

Came across an old book of #Icelandic that includes the verb "krýja," which means "to swarm". Pronounced the same as the bird, kría, and having seen kría go after people near their nests this doesn't seem like a coincidence. Not sure the verb is used anymore.
