I keep thinking about that old Bob Newhart bit where one machine calls another machine in to its office to fire it.

The Facial Expressions of Tethys by artist Julius von Bismarck. A suspended high-sea buoy that moves in real time. Sensors on a twin buoy out in the Atlantic Ocean send live satellite data to motors inside the museum. This makes the indoor buoy copy the exact, real-time movements of the ocean waves.

They were cool with the racism, sexism, bigotry, corruption, dismantling of social services and common decency, burning every ally, shooting American citizens in the face in the street, the insurrection, Trump being besties with Epstein etc etc. But once the price of gas got too high it was over.

But I'm still worried about Congress passing too many unnecessary bills.

Robert Hill @robert.hill.cx · 17/09/2026
"Lines of Code" is a dumb metric because it discounts efficiency, where you can have a clever elegant function that does, in say 20 lines of code, the same thing that an equivalent poorly-written, spaced out function takes 100 lines to do. But that probably doesn't translate to legislation well.

Robert Hill @robert.hill.cx · 17/09/2026
On the other hand, I keep whining about unrelated rider amendments being attached to bills, so ... maybe we do? I think my brain is seeing this as analogous to a "lines of code" metric, which I think is a dumb metric, so maybe I'm biased & more bills passed is fine.

Robert Hill @robert.hill.cx · 17/09/2026
Do we really have 900+ issues every two years that need a bill? I imagine some percent are resolutions declaring Congress's support for Apple Pie or whatever, but still ...that seems high?

In the living room the voice-clock sang, Tick-tock, seven o’clock, time to get up, time to get up, seven o’clock! As if it were afraid that nobody would.

Seven-nine, breakfast time, seven-nine!

In the kitchen the breakfast stove ejected eight pieces of perfectly browned toast, eight eggs sunnyside up, sixteen slices of bacon, two coffees, and two cool glasses of milk.
