I had a beta reader tell me "the healthcare scenes are unrealistic and this isn't how doctors work" with a lecture about writing what you know. She was from a country with single payer healthcare. I was writing based on my personal experiences as a disabled person in the United States.

I was trying to explain what ChatGPT is to my mom (she thought it was a messaging app) and after my explanation and some thought, she volunteered, “Oh, so it’s the magic mirror in the beginning of Snow White when it only tells the queen what she wants to hear.” Perfect analogy.

Three panel comic. Panel 1: a guy in his kitchen is blinded by an otherworldly light beaming through an open window. The refrigerator door is swung open and a tupperware container of food is drifting out towards the light in the window. The guy shouts, “NO!!” Panel 2: the guy is viewed from above, sprinting through a field bathed in an eerie light. He’s chasing the Tupperware of lasagna which soars farther away overhead. He shouts, “No, you bastards!!” Panel 3: two grey aliens are in an office break room. One making tea asks his seated coworker, “what’s for lunch?” With a mouthful of food, the other replies, “leftover lasagna.” The first one says, “looks good.”

Who is writing your headlines, BBC? That headline is about a video from the 80's and we are well past the turn of the century. Unless you got a spirit board to ask again?
A screenshot from the BBC app. The headline says "BBC asks Chuck Norris about being a 'successful, really terrible' actor"

The body of the article says, "Actor and martial artist Chuck Norris died aged 86, his family announced on Instagram. In their statement, his family said they prefer to keep the circumstances private, but described Norris' loss as "sudden".

"They went on to say, "We know many of you had heard about his recent hospitalisation, and we are truly grateful for the prayers and support you sent his way". The Hollywood action star died "at peace" surrounded by his family."

I am old enough to remember the vitriol directed at random humanities scholars' work complaining about the totalizing tendencies of capitalism to corrupt, colonize, or co-opt everything. I also lived long enough to read long term coverage of the literal attempt to privatize thinking in the newspaper

Cannot tell you how depressing it is to read that people are simply refusing to read nonfiction after you’ve worked really hard to write a nonfiction book you believe in, in case anyone is wondering why I’m posting so much about my book which comes out in a few weeks #BookSky

Are we falling out of love with nonfiction?
In the early 2020s, readers flocked to books to explain political turbulence. But is the world now too grim to read about – and are podcasters taking the place of authors?
