Illuminated Folio (recto) from a Gulistan (Rose Garden) of Sa'di (c. 1213-1291) clevelandart.org/art/2006.147.a
The Gulistan, completed around 1258, is one of the most celebrated works of Persian literature. The book’s name means “rose garden” in Persian; just as a rose garden is a collection of flowers, the contents are a collection of anecdotes. Written in both prose and verse, the Gulistan was used for centuries as a primer for schoolchildren in greater Iran, India, and Turkey. The text on these pages is written in nastaliq script and comes from the first chapter, “On the Conduct of Kings.”
The exquisite borders of these two folios show lions, dragons, foxes, and peacocks in a lush landscape, painted in gold and silver that has tarnished over time.

This is an insane detail in this report on cheating! nymag.com/intelligence...
In the meantime, many schools have turned to surveillance.
Owen, a junior at Princeton
familiar with its Honor Committee, says the school often catches AI cheats by spying on internet use. Students' browsing histories are pulled from the campus network and scanned for recent visits to ChatGPT or Claude. If you whipped out your phone during a quiz, accessing a model on the building's Wi-Fi, you will likely be busted. While every case requires multiple pieces of evidence, and Princeton says it does not pull students' search histories unless they are already under investigation, Owen says the network logs have become critical in proving academic dishonesty. Every case he's been aware of lately has leaned on them.

Arendt on why she left Germany
Gaus: Is there an exact event in your memory from which you could date your turning to the political?

Arendt: I could mention February 27, 1933, the burning of the Reichstag and the illegal arrests that took place that same night. The so-called protective custody. You know, people were taken to Gestapo cellars or concentration camps. What happened then was monstrous and has often been overshadowed by later things today. This was an immediate shock for me, and from that moment on I felt responsible. In other words, I was no longer of the opinion that you can now just watch. I tried to help in some way. But the thing that led me directly away from Germany – if I have to tell you … I never told anyone because it is completely irrelevant.

Gaus: Tell me.

Arendt: I had the intention to emigrate anyway. I was immediately of the opinion: Jews can’t stay. I had no intention of running around in Germany as a second-class citizen, so to speak, in whatever form. I was also of the opinion that things would get worse and worse. Nevertheless, in the end I did not leave in such a peaceful way. And I must say I had a certain satisfaction. I was arrested, had to leave the country illegally – I’ll tell you about it in a moment – I had an immediate satisfaction. I thought, at least I did something! At least I’m not innocent.

Feminist theory remains undefeated in explaining the weirdest parts of the Trump administration. I'm just going to keep posting this skeleton-key-to-MAGA passage, written over 40 years ago, until everyone gets it.
"To say that straight men are heterosexual is only to say that they engage in sex (fucking exclusively with the other sex, i.e., women). All or almost all of that which pertains to love, most straight men reserve exclusively for other men. The people whom they admire, respect, adore, revere, honor, whom they imitate, idolize, and form profound attachments to, whom they are willing to teach and from whom they are willing to learn, and whose respect, admiration, recognition, honor, reverence and love they desire… those are, overwhelmingly, other men. In their relations with women, what passes for respect is kindness, generosity or paternalism; what passes for honor is removal to the pedestal. From women they want devotion, service and sex.

Heterosexual male culture is homoerotic; it is man-loving.”
