Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt). #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess I struggled a bit with this one, much like last time we did #Silence
Black and white photo of Santa Cristina Gherdëina in Italy. The village appears silent, with nobody on the streets and no cars on the roads. The only signs of life are a few lights coming from buildings, and lights on the exterior of some buildings, the brightest of which illuminate the exterior of the Parish Church of Santa Cristina. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image to focus on a small portion of the village to eliminate parts of the village in which people could be seen (hopefully I’ve removed them all?!), to give the village a sense of silence.

Then I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure Module (only the tiniest smidge, so little the slider barely looked to have moved) to make as much of the village visible.

Then I activated the Colour Calibration module and converted the image to black and white, going against my usual norm and using the Fuji Acros 100 preset for once, because it gave, to my eye, the most pleasing results.

Then I activated the Denoise (profiled) module. Like the exposure module, I only moved the strength slider a smidge. The reason being two fold—if you go too far the image becomes soft, or even outright blurry, and—very much a personal preference thing, but—I don’t like all the noise to be digitally removed, to me images feel kinda soulless when that's done.

#ECK #PostProcess #Silence This week's Post Process Challenge takes us to late sunset in St. Cristina, Italy from the side of a tight switchback. It's a noisy image with great potential for stillness. Your job is to find it. #EastCoastKin tinyurl.com/2w22cvdm
#ECK #PostProcess
Sep 28 - Oct 4 #Silence

This week's Post Process Challenge is silence. This image has a volume knob. Turn it down. Whatever the original register is, busy, loud, active, or chaotic, find the version that holds still. Silence isn't always soft. A hard-contrast image with a single point of light can be the most silent thing in the room. This is about stillness, not softness.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #Subtraction 1st image was my “proper” attempt. Other 2, my curiosity got me wondering what my—long time tinkering with—WIP ‘daytime glow’ & ‘evening glow’ styles (presets) would look like.
Black and white photo of a train approaching a train station platform. The train is on one of a number of tracks, next to it another train is passing. Beside the tracks, opposite the platform, are a number of industrial buildings. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I upped the exposure a little in the Exposure module. But only a smidge. I didn’t want to lose the definition of the clouds and upping it more than a smidge blew out the sky.

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

I converted the image to black and white, using the HP5 preset on the Colour Calibration Module (it’s by far the easiest method to convert an image to black and white in Darktable, and it almost always does a good job).

Then I used the Colour Balance RGB module to make small adjustments to the contrast of the image.

I activated the Tone Equaliser module, setting it to ‘strong’.

Then I activated the Local Contrast module, leaving it at its default settings.

Finally, I activated the Filmic module, leaving it at its default settings.Photo of a train approaching a train station platform. The train is on one of a number of tracks, next to it another train is passing. Beside the tracks, opposite the platform, are a number of industrial buildings. The image was edited in Darktable using my ‘daytime glow’ style (preset)…

I manually upped the exposure a little in the Exposure Module. I only upped it a smidge as I didn’t want to lose the definition of the clouds and upping it more than a smidge blew out the sky.

Then I cropped the image - in all honesty, I did so by playing around with the crop box rather randomly (set to the original image’s aspect ratio) until I got an idea of a crop I liked.

Then I applied my ‘daytime glow’ style:

It activated the Colour Balance RGB module - I then went in and manually made small adjustments to things such as global chroma and saturation based on the image.

Then it activated the Colour Zones module, setting chroma and lightness to a fairly pleasing default - I then went in and made some small adjustments manually.

It then activates the Filmic module, with the settings set to default as that is almost always the best.

It activates the Local Contrast module, with the settings set to default as it’s usually sufficient.

Finally, it added a colour toned graduated density filter in the Graduated Density module - which I went into and made some minor adjustments based on the image.Photo of a train approaching a train station platform. Black and white photo of a Moab desert landscape. In the distance a towering red-rock formation is framed by the remains of two long dead (at least they look that way) trees in the foreground. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I cropped the image. Going rogue and using a portrait orientation. I did this to focus on the most textured part of the image, and to play a little with natural framing.

I upped the exposure a smidge in the—aptly named—Exposure Module.

Then I activated the Contrast Equaliser Module, initially running its clarity preset, and then tinkering with it, fine tuning it by eye.

I then activate a second instance of the Contrast Equaliser Module, running the sharpen preset, and tinkering with it to also fine tune its the results by eye.

Then I converted the image to black and white, using the HP5 preset on the Colour Calibration Module (by far the easiest method to convert an image to black and white in Darktable, and it almost always does a damn good job).

Finally, I activated the Colour Equaliser module, repositioned it so that it was before the black and white conversion in the pixelpipe (the order in which Darktable processed the modules) so it would alter the final image, and flung the sliders around for a bit, using them to in effect dodge and burn areas of the image.

Sorry for missing last week--had a long weekend in Moab and then post-labor day work craziness. This week's image is coming from Moab and the challenge is #Texture. Push it forward or pull it back. No destination is wrong--your call. #ECK #PostProcess #EastCoastKin tinyurl.com/mw97kpdy
Sep 14 - Sep 20 Texture

This week's Post Process Challenge is Texture. Destination: Moab. Everyone starts here — where you take it is up to you.

Push it forward or pull it back. Sharpen it into something you can almost feel, or smooth it into something that barely holds a surface at all. No destination in mind — just pick a direction and follow it.

Curious to see how far apart everyone lands in a scene like this.

Landscape photo of an expanse of water surrounded by trees, on the other side of the water three figures stand looking out. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and was processed by me to—hopefully—look like a painting

The image was edited in Darktable…

Knowing that I would be using modules that cause my laptop a great deal of issues (a lot of noise and a slight burning smell are not uncommon!) I processed the jpeg, rather than the raw file.

I activated the Denoise (profiled) module, changing the colour mode to RGB, and increasing the strength to 4 to soften the image, removing the crisp, clean edges in a digital photo to instead emulate the softness of a painted image.

Then in the Defuse/Sharpen module I activated the ‘simulated line drawing’ preset. This introduces swirly lines (the technical term, I believe) that give a feeling of brush strokes. I changed the blending mode to Harmonic Mean, and lowered the opacity.

Then I set it exporting and pottered around for an hour and half running errands while it exported.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #EraShift #PostProcess
Black and white photo of a small chapel building sitting just off a small road in a valley surrounded by large hills or mountains (according to Google it’s largely subjective whether something is called a mountain or a hill, so who knows?), taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and processed by me to—hopefully—look like a scan of a silver gelatin print of the ‘30s–’50s. But not one processed by someone competent, like Ansel Adams, one processed by someone accident prone, like myself, that’s why light leaks have crept in from the enlarger.

The image was edited in Darktable…

Having found Darktable was unable to open the RAW file, I converted it with Adobe DNG Converter. Because Adobe DNG Converter works fairly fast no matter the size of a file, I forgot to check the size of the file after it was converted (that will come back to haunt me later!).

I increased the exposure a little and ran Darktable’s automated lens correction module.

I then used the Colour Calibration module to convert the image to black and white using the Ilford HP5 preset (my favourite of the presets).

Using the Tone Equaliser module I then pulled the shadows a little and recovered the highlights a smidge having affected them in previous steps.

Then I activated the Filmic RGB module, running it in automatic as it’s much, much smarter than I am, so me playing with the sliders would be a disaster.

I then used the Contrast Equaliser module to lower the mid-tone clarity a little and increase sharpening slightly.

I added some grain, playing around with a view to emulate the silver halide crystals in silver gelatin prints.

I then added a vignette, lowering the saturation a little to emulate fall-off sometimes seen when an enlarger has been used, especially when used by someone a bit accident prone, like myself.

Then, having realised that I didn’t check the file size before editing, I lowered the export quality, crossed my fingers, and hit export.

45-ish minutes later Darktable had finished exporting.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #TonalShift The first image is my “proper” attempt, the second image is simply because curiosity got me wondering how it would look cropped with the predefined XPan aspect ratio.
Black and white photo of a theatre stage, a figure is walking across it towards a bright spotlight. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I applied one of my many, currently tinkering with and trying to perfect, black & white Presents (or Styles as Darktable calls them), before going into a number of the modules after applying the preset so I could make some minor, image specific tweeks..

The process of the preset (style) is:-

The Exposure module increases the exposure a smidge, because later steps always seem to darken images a little.

It then activates the Colour Calibration module, which converts the image to black & white using the Ilford HP5 preset.

Then it activates the Colour Balance RGB module, adjusting the Global Saturation and Global Chroma - After applying the preset I went in and made some image specific adjustments manually.

It then activates the Colour Zones module, and inserts it before the Colour Calibration module in the order of modules, and in effect dodges and burns the image - After applying the preset I went in and made some image specific adjustments manually.

Then it activates the Filmic module, with everything set to default/auto as I’ve never found it to need intervention from me.

Finally, it activates the Velvia module, with everything set to default/auto.Black and white photo of a theatre stage, a figure is walking across it towards a bright spotlight. The photo was taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and processed by me.

#TonalShift Start by removing the color. After that you decide what to do next with what's left. High key, low key, noir, push process, cyanotype, straight monochrome — your call. What details are important? How and where do you direct the eye? tinyurl.com/3bdkdpz7 #EastCoastKin #ECK #PostProcess

Aug 17 - Aug 23 #Tonal Shift

Start by removing the color. That's the only instruction.

An old theater stage — gold leaf, red velvet, a single spotlight against a black curtain. Plenty of tone already living in there once the color's gone: deep shadow, a hot blown highlight, ornament everywhere in between. Strip it and decide what to do with what's left. High key, low key, noir, straight monochrome — your call.

Your job is to make the photo sing without the color.

Photo taken by @rjrock.bsky.social & processed by me (brief process in alt) #ECK #EastCoastKin #PostProcess #UnreliableNarrator I struggled with this one (my brain was being most unreliable), and in all honesty, I’m not sure how I feel about my effort…
Image of the interior of a church in Senegal with three people sitting in the pews, taken by @rjrock.bsky.social and processed by me.

The image was edited in Darktable…

I applied my Trichrome Infrared Present (or Style as Darktable calls it) that I have been working on for a while (and have used in a previous challenge) to—hopefully—introduce a subtle sense of surrealism with the colours.

The process of the preset (style) is:-

The Exposure module increases the exposure a smidge, and adjusts the black point a tad.

Then the Colour equaliser module changes the greens to a red colour and the blues to an “inky” blue.

The Lens Correct module then introduces a little chromatic aberration to the image to emulate the slight haloing you’d likely see in trichrome infrared images.

And it ends by running the Velvia module, with all at default as I’ve always found it to be sufficient.

After I had applied my preset (style), I flipped the image horizontally to, in theory, introduce into the viewer’s subconscious the idea that something might not be quite right with the image. The idea was that it would hopefully be subtle, that the viewer would have to search for what feels wrong. But it’s ended up even more subtle than I planned, as it turns out the emergency exit sign that sparked the idea doesn’t have a specified default format, meaning it will still look “right” to anyone viewing it. It has affected other things though, such as text, and the logo on the football shirt that one of the people sitting in the pews is wearing, so hopefully it still works as intended.

#UnreliableNarrator #PostProcess #ECK Every image tells a story and your editing choices shape the story your image conveys. This is about using your edits to tell a story other than the one you see in the raw frame. Files tinyurl.com/37uuh45v
Aug 10 - Aug 16 #UnreliableNarrator

Every image tells a story. In documentary photography, the goal is documenting. In fine art photography, the goal is moving people. Your post-processing choices help you shape the story you want to tell.

This challenge is about using your edits to tell a story other than the one you see in the frame.

The image is a church, daylight hours, Senegal, three people in it. Or is it? That's yours to decide. Maybe it's not a church. Maybe it's not daylight. Maybe it's mid-sermon. Maybe it's abandoned.

Your process, your story. Visual truth optional.
