Art vs Artist 2025! I didn't think I'd have enough to show for, but I dug up some studies and doodles as filler 😊 another year defeated! We even get a new selfie doodle this year hehe #artvsartist
Ringlov's art vs artist grid: 8 drawings in a 3x3 grid, with a graphite self-portrait doodle in the centre. Clockwise around the selfie, starting from top-left:
1. a portrait study of a person in a fawn costume, wearing horns, fluffy ears, and a painted snout on their nose, long brown wavy hair and mustache and beard fitting in perfectly 👌,
2. a portrait study of a short-haired person wearing glasses, leaning their chin on the back of their hand, looking absent-mindedly to the right, rendered in faux burnt sienna oil paint + turpentine in Procreate,
3. a digital pencil sketch of a curly-haired bearded man wearing a coat with the collar popped up, looking towards the left,
4. a graphite pencil + watercolour sketch of a highlander cat with its cute curly ears,
5. an ink + watercolour drawing of a white mouse wearing striped pants and a maple seed tied to its back that looks like wings, brandishing a needle sword with a button for a guard, standing in blossoming moss,
6. another faux oil + turpentine sketch in Procreate, of a woman in 3/4 view, making eye contact with the viewer, her long curly hair framing her face,
7. a drawing of a Dragon Age character with a winged cape, jumping towards the viewer, big grin on their face, their long black curly hair flowing behind them, the billowing cape making it look like they're flying,
8. a drawing of a white anthropomorphic feline character brandishing a bo staff, in a low stance, looking menacingly off to the right

If you want to communicate your idea to an artist all you need is 30 seconds and the basic ability to grip a pen
A Demonschool sketch I did for our artists that looks like a 5 year old did it, showing a goofy giant head saying "I'm huge" looming over a rectangle representing a battle grid. Three stick figures stand in the rectangle, and three circles with lines going vertically are scattered around. There's also a squiggle around the rectangle that says "surrounding." A finished alien-looking Demonschool boss, all purple and pink, with a giant xenomorph-looking head looming over the playfield and tentacles and things that surround it. This very nice art is based on the crappy drawing I did.

Develop “concept art”?? 💀 💀 💀 All the image models solely rely on stolen work of countless of artists to function at capacity. Using them not only is deeply unethical but puts the company at risk. Not worth it and I truly hope ( hell, I’m begging) that they reconsider 😭

Stop using AI for placeholder assets. Use sketches. Use lorem ipsum. Use bright pink materials. Use programmer art for fucks sake, literally anything else. If your studio is using AI even for temp, even if they think they've covered their tracks, SPEAK UP because people WILL FIND IT

Before I go: take a minute to breathe in real deep and picture yourself sitting in this driftwood shack at Rincon Point. Someone's hung a little rock from a hole left by a piddock clam. It's swaying in the breeze. There's an osprey overhead. You can see a seal in the surf. Soon you'll go swimming.
A ramshackle structure of driftwood frames a view of the Pacific Ocean. A tiny stone swings suspended on a piece of twine from the edge of the shack. The sky is bright blue and traced with faint clouds. It is morning. You are happy.

tell me all the businesses that inexplicably survived or inexplicably failed in your neighborhood Wondermark #1569; The Foldery has Folded
A couple walks down the street, the man in a turban, the woman in a very high-collared fur coat. This is ASHWAY and BERTREX

A: You know that origami flower shop we keep talking about maybe one day wandering through?
A: I finally had an occasion for which I would have liked some paper flowers. But they’ve closed!

B: That’s a shame, they just opened like five years ago!
B: I wonder how much of our community is powered by people imprudently opening wildly unprofitable businesses, pouring their time and savings into them for the period of exactly one commercial lease, then letting them close.

B: Like, it didn’t turn out to be sustainable, but for a while, you offered some cool origami classes for kids, and some people in the neighborhood have some paper flowers in their homes now? I assume?

B: Sorry it didn’t make you a millionaire, but you shoved the big stone wheel back uphill a few turns, and that helped us all.
A: And, in this metaphor, the big stone wheel is...
B: The thing that’ll smash us all into dust with its uncaring inertia if we don’t hold it at bay with our collective effort, yeah

A: Okay, cool. And our collective effort, in this context, means buying forty-dollar paper flowers?
B: Is THAT how much they cost?
B: I kept meaning to look in the store window when I walked by, but I never managed to tear my eyes away from my phone.

Since 2023, translators and interpreters have seen work dry up, rates plummet and their jobs reduced to editing AI-generated output. Some are leaving the field, others are considering bankruptcy. All despite any major upgrade in translation quality. This is how AI is killing translation work:

and--idk quite how to articulate this--but the work of it is... critical to art-making. like you discover your intentions through the labor of expressing them. if I'd woken up at 17 with the technical ability to write a novel, i wouldn't have known what i was trying to say. the work IS the product.

A digital, faux-traditional ink drawing of an elf from the back, deep in thought. She's wearing full armour and holding a large sword in one arm, leaning the blade against her right shoulder. Her long black hair is gently flowing in the wind.

Sylfaen for @princessjerboa.bsky.social! 💖 #artfight #ringsrooks #rook #veilguard #dragonage #artfight2025
A collage of drawings of a sweet elf with big wavy pink hair. One drawing is full-body, in which she's in full armour, leaning on her large gilded shield. The other two drawings are busts; in one she's wearing casual clothing and leaning on one arm, lost in thought, and in the other she's wearing a purple flower crown and reaching up with one hand to touch it.

Incredible. Roland Reisley is 101 years old, the last original client of Frank Lloyd Wright. He still lives in the 3,200 square foot home that Wright built for him in 1952. The price? $40,000. Or a little less than half a million in today's money.
A man standing on what appears to be a balcony of his home. The man's living room. There's a couch, coffee table, and foot stool, as well as some tall windows. Lots of wood. Another living space with a fireplace and bookshelf. Possibly a compression hallway leading to this room. The outside of the home.

Gift card please 🫱
(Optional) Is there anything else you want to share about your views on AI?
It is a wasteful, unlawful, unethical and transparently exploitative. It is being championed by the same people who championed NFTs and the blockchain, and look at how those turned out. It is immensely frustrating as an artist barely making enough to live to see people use generative AI as a means of not hiring real living artists.

AI doesn't "democratize" art. Artistic ability is within every person with a human soul; you can make art with a pencil and paper. You can make art with a stick and some flat dirt. It is not the polish of the finished product that makes art worthwhile. What AI "democratizes" is the uncreative's ability to make money off of other people's work with enough plausible deniability that they get away with it for a couple years. It is fascism's medium of choice, look at the "Ghibli-fied" memes that ICE posts on their social media. Art has never been more devalued, at a time when more artists than ever are struggling to make ends meet.

Truly, the AI fad cannot be over soon enough, and I wish nothing but the worst for the very, very rich who sold every company in this country a magic bean.

Enter your email if you'd like to be entered into the sweepstakes to win one of five $100 gift cards redeemable at a location of your choice. Five winners will be randomly drawn and notified on September 5, 2025.

Sample calculation of what will happen to RedBubble Standard Tier accounts on September 2025.
Sample calculation of RedBubble's new fees effective September 1, 2025 for a Standard Tier account which will be charged a 50% fee of their earnings.

For a small sticker with a base price of $3.27 at 50% markup:
It will retail at $4.91, the markup will be $1.64. RedBubble will pocket $0.49 for the "excess markup" fee so the artist will receive $1.14 markup for selling a small sticker.

You need to sell 35 units of this sticker priced at $4.91 to reach at least $40.06 worth of earnings from your markup.
Then RedBubble will deduct 50% from your earnings as part of their new policy with Standard Tier accounts.
You'll be left with $20.03 and only then you're finally eligible for payout.

You could have earned $57.23 instead if these fee policies didn't exist.

In this example, RedBubble has fleeced you around $37.20 before you could receive the minimum $20 payout.
