Six months.

Six months since Pittfest. Six months of biweekly therapy, preceded by a month-long sabbatical.

Six months of saying all of the inside thoughts out loud and Dr. Micheal Robinavitch, MD, head of Emergency at PTMC, senior attending -- had learned exactly three things.

First: He was an idiot for ignoring his mental health and working himself into the ground. He’d not only done himself a disservice, but also those around him. By ignoring self-care he hadn’t been a self-sacrificing martyr. He’d been an idiot.

As his therapist, Amy, was so fond of saying, he could not “pour from an empty cup”. By ignoring himself he’d also been hurting everyone who depended on him (or cared about him, Amy would chime in).

Robby still wasn’t ready to accept help for himself, but he could get help so he could better help others. Amy said she didn’t care why he kept coming back, so long as he did.

Second: He’d learnt to practice what he preached.

Or, well, he was trying.

When Robby’d gone to med school it had been the time of “I suffered and so you must suffer.” Grueling thirty-six hour shifts. Taking power naps in chairs in empty rooms. Forgetting what a meal was. He’d worked hard, in the Pitt, to make sure the new generation of doctors didn’t start out with those bad habits.

Until recently Robby definitely fell into the “do as I say, not as I do,” sort of teacher. However, he was forced to admit, the students and residents did a lot better at following the guidelines when Robby led by example.

As a result everyone in the ED was less tired, more alert, catching mistakes… hell, they even had enough emotional bandwidth to get those patient satisfaction scores up. Gloria was almost tolerable to be around now.

Almost.

But all of these things Robby had more or less understood about himself before he’d started therapy. Amy had helped him work through them, come up with tools and strategies to manage them, but none of them had blindsided him like the third thing.

Third: Rooby was in love with Jack Abbot.

Truly. Deeply. Madly. Irrevocably in love with his straight, ex-military, widowed best friend of twenty years.

And it was the third thing that had led to the forth. This absolute suckerpunch to the gut as he stepped out onto the roof and saw Jack standing in the rare Pittsburgh sunshine, hair glowing with the ghost of his ginger curls, long since overrun by silver.

Forth: Robby was so fucked.

But this is to misunderstand the purpose of fan fiction. Fan fiction starts with the itch of dissatisfaction, it is the art of emotional correction. When what is canon fails to deliver, the fan fiction writers step in, armed with Word documents and righteous indignation. You think this character deserved more hand-holding? Fine. Someone out there is writing 10,000 words of forehead kisses and mutual healing right now.
Because fan fiction isn't just rewriting, it's repairing. It's giving yourself the closure you need when the author won't. It's deciding that pain can end differently, that love can be louder, that characters who were doomed in print get to live this time. It's literature written by people who refused to move on and sometimes these people spell really badly (and that is completely OK).
And yes, it's rebellion. Against gatekeeping, against prestige, against the assumption that stories only count when they make money.
Fan fiction exists because readers loved something so much they refused to let it die.

Some amazing gay history. Listen up kids.

I'm watching that documentary "Before Stonewall" about gay history
pre-1969, and uncovered something which I think is interesting.

The documentary includes a brief clip of a 1954 televised newscast
about the rise of homosexuality. The host of the program interviewed
psychologists, a police officer, and one "known homosexual". The
"known homosexual" is 22 years old. He identifies himself as Curtis
White, which is a pseudonym; his name is actually Dale Olson.
So I tracked down the newscast. According to what I can find, Dale
Olson may have been the first gay man to appear openly on television
and defend his sexual orientation. He explains that there's nothing
wrong with him mentally and he's never been arrested. When asked
whether he'd take a cure if it existed, he says no. When asked whether
his family knows he's gay, he says that they didn't up until tonight, but
he guesses they're going to find out, and he'll probably be fired from
his job as well. So of course the host is like ... why are you doing this
interview then? and Dale Olson, cool as cucumber pie, says "I think
that this way I can be a little useful to someone besides myself."

1954. 22 years old. Balls of pure titanium.

Despite the pseudonym, Dale's boss did indeed recognize him from
the TV program, and he was promptly fired the next day. He wrote into
ONE magazine six months later to reassure readers that he had gotten
a new job at a higher salary.
Curious about what became of him, I looked into his life a little further.
It turns out that he ultimately became a very successful publicity
agent. He promoted the Rocky movies and Superman. Not only that,
but get this: Dale represented Rock Hudson, and he was the person
who convinced him to disclose that he had AIDS! He wrote the
statement Rock read. And as we know, Rock Hudson's disclosure had
a very significant effect on the national conversation about AIDS in the
U.S.
