Denise Okuda behind the scenes of STAR TREK VI: THE UNDISCOVERED COUNTRY (1991)

Denis Okuda works to hand place gels to create backlit graphics for the USS Excelsior bridge set.

Michael Okuda described the process of cutting and placing elements of the backlit displays by hand as "laborious" work: "Denise and I worked seven days a week for about three months to prepare the graphics for the film. bridge... Back in those ancient days of stone knives and bearskins, we used X-acto knives to hand-cut sheets of lighting gel in order to color the backlit graphics. Before the invention of the color inkjet printer, we made control panels and displays with large, high-contrast black-and-white film transparencies. We hand-cut pieces of colored lighting gel and glued them behind the sheet film. It was a laborious process, but the resulting graphics were sharper, clearer, and had more vibrant colors than present-day inkjet transparencies."

There are two elements of this reasoning that I confirm (time and again) because I have been able to make the comparison: - Verifying AI output requires human review time. - Verifying AI output requires expertise equal to or greater than that required to generate the output manually. 💯
