I teach bystander intervention for a living and have taught de-escalation to law enforcement. Trust me when I say that bottle girls, gas station clerks, strippers, front desk employees at hotels and airports, baristas, etc. have better de-escalation skills than any cop I've ever seen.

Emile Hirsch almost murdered a woman by choking her and dragging her across a table in public and full view of witnesses and people had to pull him off of her to keep him from killing her. He spent a few days in jail. She has PTSD for life. He has still not apologized directly to her.
