fwiw if you want to make a strategic case for congressional democrats trying to impeach trump if they take majorities, i think the first step is impeaching hegseth, the bar is lower and the likelihood of success is probably much higher

Meta is taking down the accounts of gay bars while not just allowing but RESTORING this type of material
As we reported the story, Meta eventually pulled down an account we shared with it that had uploaded a particularly disturbing array of AI videos that depicted children being viciously beaten and forced to eat trash, as well as many more appalling scenarios including a young girl being locked in a freezer by a kidnapper.

But after we published our piece, we were surprised to see that the account had been reinstated, along with its sickening cache of videos. We reached out to Meta to ask why the account was live again and received a curt response from a spokesperson.

Been wearing a sport coat for most of this week for various work-related things, and my takeaway is that we’ve got to normalize wearing these things on more casual occasions again. A nice one looks great and having all these pockets is amazing.

During and after the Great Recession it was striking to hear business leaders and guys like Paul Ryan describe incredible cruel ideas in bloodless, neutral language. Now their successors have even worse ideas and instead of bloodless neutrality they all sound like Jim Jones.

It’s important to understand that the modern GOP’s vision for the economy, as implemented by the party’s leader, is about allocating resources through a combination of patrimonialism, influence peddling and outright theft rather than open market transactions.

If care about free markets, you not only get more from center-left Dems than the party of Trump, you get more *from professed democratic socialists* like Mamdani than you do from the party of Trump. Those who deny this only think of it as an anti-left cultural totem and not a real policy agenda.

Also just stuff like road diets. I suspect one reason (by no means the only reason) you see fewer mega-SUVs in, say, Japan is because it's a huge pain in the ass to drive those things in narrower lanes!

I don't think this is right. Even halfway-decent LLMs are now at the point where they can routinely pass the Turing test; the problem is that the Turing test turns out to not be a very good way to assess whether an entity is conscious.

When you take away the eschatology, I suspect a lot of the "is AI conscious" debate is really about whether AI can be an independent moral agent, in which case its creators bear less legal and moral responsibility for its actions than if it's non-conscious tool.

Yeah, I strongly suspect AB 1482 is the happy medium, protecting the vast majority of renters against price gouging without meaningfully impacting supply. AB 1482 thankfully *was* binding during pandemic-era inflation, although I'm not sure it was enforced very effectively.

Of note, one of this year's ballot measures is purportedly to fund necessary medical research, but a close examination reveals that it's basically a $4 billion taxpayer payout to a single sketchy nonprofit. That's why it's important to read the fine print.

Yes, a lot of the "No on 40" campaign is bad faith, but not all of it. As for implementation: yes, there are few billionaires but investigating the full scope of their assets is no easy thing. The state could for sure build up the capacity if it weren't a one-time levy. Otherwise, I'm doubtful.
