If you are a popular politician and you just announce things people will support them because they are confident you are acting in their best interests.

This is the way. Personally I don’t generate an opinion until i take hours going through my unsorted notes again. That’s how you get the best hot takes

Patenting is as much about stopping other people from doing something (or at least getting them to pay you for doing it) as it is about wanting to do something yourself

am having to force myself to live in a state of at least partial denial because I find the currenty situation so deeply nauseating that constant knowledge of it would probably have a significant impact on my day-to-day

I would actually go so far as to say we’re not even really competing with the US. The US has such a massive domestic market that most US service providers aren’t that interested in export Which means the UK have (close to) a global monopoly on English-language professional services exports

This is an insane statement. They *were* foreign nationals leaving a coach! The mob was not actually wrong! The councillor is implying that the issue is they got the wrong kind of foreign national. If it has been a bus full of tourists? Would have have been fair game? What about intl students?

The same wooly thinking that leads to them dreaming up incoherent ethical standards instead of using the laws the actually exist in the country (cf. plagiarism vs copyright infringement)

Insane behaviour from The Public™️ “It’s not Alton Towers” well, quite!! www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...
In May a pair of charity hikers were met with jeers from a queue at the summit as they tapped the trig point to complete a charity challenge.
Jamie Richardson, 32, and Richard Thiedeman,
34, from Lincolnshire, were climbing Yr Wyddfa as part of the Three Peaks challenge to raise money for their friend who has motor neurone disease (MND).
"I was getting booed and then there was a gentleman who was at the top, who had just had his photo taken and he physically tried to stop me," Richardson said.
He said he had just touched the summit point and heard someone say "you should be ashamed of yourself".
Richardson added: "There's no policing of it at all, it is purely free will, if you want to queue you can.
"The queuing, that is just purely down to British culture traditions."

I do think academia has a real problem both with plagiarism and with what plagiarism actually is. There’s a reason copyright law stops where it does, and it’s the same reason why plagiarism is as a concept is incoherent to the extent it goes beyond that

This is fantastic, by @suscrockford.bsky.social I was - personally - particularly interested in the analysis of how society views scientists, vs how scientists view themselves, and how those conceptions interact with the sources of science’s legitimacy

Oh, so the over-leveraging of our higher ed sector on intl students is also to blame for the inflation of entry tariffs & all the undue pressure on 6th Formers? You mean it wasn’t just “grade inflation”?? It wasn’t just unis compensating for schools “dumbing down”??? Wha…?! Colour me shocked.

This is going to eventually be an issue in any city region made up of multiple councils where the central/business area is run by a different council from the residential areas. Most of the people using council services are commuters or tourists but the voters are the handful of remaining residents

Exactly - which means the characters’ worldview (updated to make them “good”) doesn’t match their actions. This is the fundamental problem at the core of Nolan’s film Still a great film, 4/5 stars, but the *text* is fundamentally flawed

Gautam Kambhampati @gautampk.com · 28/07/2026
This whole discourse has been Film People don’t understand character and Literature People don’t understand acting. The core of her critique is that changes made for the film mean characters’ motivations are incoherent with their actions. That is a good critique, and it’s also true

The film was “what if the Odyssey, but Arthurian” Because Odysseus the chivalric knight would not have made the same decisions as Homer’s, Nolan had to strip him of agency, so we got none of his cleverness Instead shit just happens to him as a kind of purgatory for the “sins” he committed in Troy

Lot of criticism of the typography of the writ, which is all valid But this is essentially just a boring bureaucratic document it’s quite endearing that we treat it with the same typographic care as any boring bureaucratic document (ie none) but also haven’t updated the language since the 1700s
