"The good times ain't gonna last" doesn't get enough people off their asses when the times are in fact good. Not to mention how so many software people are temporarily embarrassed billionaires.

I've had this thought on a number of occasions for the past decade, but I don't know that there was a "could" because of the coordination problem. Why would you try to unionize when you're well paid and working conditions are good?

No, this is more like giving an insane person a hammer and watch them beat themselves and the people around them in the face. The stupid thing they did to make your meds expensive already happened before someone gave them the hammer.

Facebook really doesn't want you to see the new documentary exposing Elon Musk Neither do TikTok or Google or the eX social media site. Since they won't accept paid advertising, let's do some free advertising. Go see Musk in theaters October 9 www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/dig...

The Major Social Media Platforms Are All Rejecting Paid Ads for Alex Gibney’s ‘Musk’ (Exclusive)
YouTube, TikTok and Meta have all turned down the trailer for the Oct. 9 doc, citing “political” content. X won't even take Bleecker Street's calls. The distributor is appealing.

On the plus side management has yet to increase workloads to make up for the increased efficiency from AI integrations in EMRs so my wife has been able to leave work less late every now and then.

The failures of the US medical system are regulatory in nature, and in the absence of fundamental reforms it will use all available means to worsen its own dysfunction.

Erik @rekmarks.com · 26/09/2026
No, AI is not "doing" this. The US medical system has created a multibillion dollar market for hospitals and insurers to play stupid billing games, and they are now using AI to make them even stupider.

Ink & Switch's approach of being forward-looking while staying uncompromising on both the value of intention in what you make and the necessity of shaping the world to match your and your community'´s system of values is (in my opinion) the most essential message in software right now
A quote from Peter van Hardenberg, the lab director of Ink & Switch, from his talk "How to Research Tools for Thought":

"I would encourage everybody to think about how – as we're moving through this new world – that we are intentional about how we shape it. And I don't want to tell you whether you should or shouldn't adopt any particular technology, but I will tell you that the world will not wait for us – and that we need to figure out how we can engage with our values and our intentions, and how we can serve our communities to make sure that the people who are using these tools that we build and that other people build are able to do them in safe and trustworthy ways, but also in ways that are satisfying and joyful and let us have what we set out to do."

“How much is a magical world worth?” A beautiful thread about Cabo Verde, the Peace Corps, and the World Cup:
Jill Tucker
@jilltucker
X.com
If you ever doubt how magical this world is, one day you will decide to go to a World Cup watch party in Oakland that you found online to root for a country where you spent two years trying to coax English out of the mouths of Cape Verdean teenagers. 1/7

And at the watch party you will ask the organizer if he's from Cape Verde. He will say yes, from Praia. And you'll say oh! I lived there for two years. I was a teacher. And he will ask, "What's your name?" You will tell him and he will say,
"You were my teacher."
CABO VERDE
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 92K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
And across 30+ years and 6,000 miles you will hug a now man who tried to find you and remembered the songs you taught him and his classmates and he will apologize for how badly behaved they all were. And you will laugh and try not to cry and gape in wonder at at this crazy world.

Jill Tucker
@jilltucker

You will remember how much you love the World Cup. And what the Peace Corps meant to you. What those students, 40 to a class with no glass on the windows, meant to you.
11:43 AM • 6/25/26 • 62K ViewsJill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h
Ivan, the grown man with a touch of grey in his beard, will tell you later he has struggled to describe what it meant to him to meet again - that he shared our photo with classmates.
And when he returns from watching the Cabo Verde game, we will try to find the words together.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker • 20h And then you read that the US
House of Representatives will vote a day before that game on an amendment to eliminate the Peace Corps, which costs 1/6 the price of the Tomahawk missiles the US used in the war on Iran.

Jill Tucker @jilltucker •20h And you wonder: How much is a magical world worth?

I’ve been striving to do this as well, one salient thing I’ve arrived at particularly with gen ai art / music / writing is the loss of specific authorship, how this removes it from the chain of being and erases discussion around the piece and thereby any possible emergent culture

For the three other people that will find this funny.
What appears to be an in-game screenshot from Morrowind (2002) in a first-person perspective. A low-polygon man with long hair, a black band T-shirt that says "Tool" and blue jeans squats in a river in the rain. At the top of the screen is the subtitles "No. The frequencies hit different in here." At the bottom of the screen is the quest dialogue "Objective failed: Convince Tool fan to leave the water (0/1)." Behind the man are massive leafy trees and mushrooms, and a flying pterodactyl creature. The river fades into the foggy distance. Also at the bottom of the screen, slightly cropped out are the standard HUD elements: the health, magicka, and stamina bars, the equipped item slot (currently empty) and the player character's raised gloved right hand.

Establishing institutions that authenticate data seems more promising than detecting what's fake in the long run. That is also a good problem to think about because if we don't have such institutions we can't have a society.

Lagerkvist was a staunch anti-Nazi and The Executioner is basically a pamphlet in that vein that still manages to be shockingly (and very Swedishly) racist.

Erik @rekmarks.com · 16/05/2026
Ah, literally "anything from a Nobel laureate". These are also mid-century and existentialist, but I found Pär Lagerkvist's The Executioner (Bödeln) and Barabbas interesting when I read them earlier this year in the Swedish. They are also short, and probably translate well.

What else is on the list? You could always re-read, "nobody steps in the same river twice" and so forth. Even if you still dislike them, it could be interesting to see if you dislike them for different reasons.
