i see, the whole thing about "no hardware support for MTE on the Pixel 11" was just a misunderstanding about the fact that Linux emulates the feature registers and sets ID_AA64PFR1_EL1.MTE to zero when you boot with `arm64.nomte`, doh 🤦

TIL there's a paper about the Ampere MTE implementation that gives a pretty good overview of some pain points (and presumably it's worse when everything has to be low-power!) arxiv.org/pdf/2511.177...

Hummingbirds.
A four panel comic. In panel 1, a rufous hummingbird flies down toward a large hummingbird feeder with as many as 6 holes on top. He thinks "The humans put up a new feeder!" In panel 2, he lands on the feeder and gazes down at it. He thinks "It's huge. Many of us could feed here at once." In panel 3, we see a close up view of the hummingbird, and he's thinking "This could end the ancient rivalries. Usher in an era of peace. Interesting." In panel 4, an Anna's hummingbird hovers over the feeder and says "Hey, can I have some necta-" and the rufous hummingbird says "No."

like, if the mmio writes are nonposted hypertransport transactions (*always* ordered wrt each other, and they impose order on the queue of posted transactions), you expect the aliasing load/store in the middle is not allowed to start before the mmio write is complete? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
110
eigenform @reflexive.space · 15/08/2026
i think it means "posted to hypertransport queue where younger transactions are [generally] allowed to start before responses to older transactions" but yeah, its not clear to me how that affects what happens in the CPU's load/store queue inbetween those mfences!!
110
eigenform @reflexive.space · 15/08/2026
i feel like this should always be ordered correctly? so the thing happening here is really just "make very sure there are no pending transactions, toggle the mappings for a very brief time, make sure only one load/store escapes"? cc @there.is.no.aarch64.mov

re f16h dram scrambling thing
BKDG for AMD Family 16h Models 30h-3Fh Processors

"Since MMIO configuration cycles are not serializing in the way that IO configuration cycles are, their ordering
rules relative to posted may result in unexpected behavior.
Therefore, processor MMIO configuration space is designed to match the following ordering relationship that
exists naturally with IO-space configuration: if a core generates a configuration cycle followed by a posted-
write cycle, then the posted write is held in the processor until the configuration cycle completes. As a result,
any unexpected behavior that might have resulted if the posted-write cycle were to pass MMIO configuration
cycle is avoided."
