Steve Jobs convinced me more than anything else to believe in conventional medicine. As the joke goes, what do they call alternative medicine that works? Medicine. On another note, I hope you will appreciate this image. I find myself using it often.

A tiny stupid glimmer of joy in the mud: a scenario in the hour-long mandatory online anti-corruption training I'm completing for work happens to include a person with they/them pronouns, and this scenario has nothing to do with their gender. I love this & hate that it's noteworthy.

Barista: Got any fun plans for the weekend? Me: No, I'm having surgery in a week and a half and I have a ton of stuff to do at home to prepare. Barista: Oh, I'm sorry to hear that! I hope you recover well. The other day, I had one of those moments where I freaked out...

Hey, thank you so much for posting about this here! Are you open to talking to patients about this? I had just started HRT for menopause (which helped a lot!) when I got diagnosed with GCT. They said I may be able to restart after my staging surgery. I would love to learn as much as I can about this

Had a beautiful moment of human connection with a customer support person from Amazon. I called to check delivery status for items on my “surgery recovery” registry. She asked about it and I mentioned my recent cancer diagnosis. She also has cancer and she was so uplifting and kind.

The correct answer is to vote for quartz, please. Childhood whimsy, a beautiful selection of colors, it makes wonderful jewelry under several gemstone names - things don't have to be obscure or uncommon to be worthwhile! Vote quartz!

I swear, sometimes just looking after a body is a full time job. I know, no surprise. But just, I'm trying to handle a healthcare incident and also some ongoing conditions and just all the phone calls are a lot! And I haven't even gone to the dentist or optician in a while. There's so much.

Last week I had drove 4 hrs, shot 2723 shots over 7 hours with 2 cameras, hardly slept, then drove back to LA, had a dentist and doctor's appointment Worth it This is the Perseids Meteor Shower over the Milky Way in Mt Pinos with 100s of my newest friends 🌌 PDFs: drive.google.com/drive/u/0/fo...
A foreground of dozens of cars, including a camper right in the middle, and someone on the right side with their parking lights on, in front of a mountain and trees. above that is the milky way with air pollution which fades into a larger star field, that looks like old pictures of space. That star field was taken with a nikon lens from the 70s so it gives a different sense, and the milky way was taken with a new 20mm lens, 14 shots, merged. the retro sky is 2 shots. there are 14 meteors that mostly focus on the center of the picture, but these aren't where they were in the sky. I shot 8 to 10 different areas of the sky that night. All meteors but one were with my new camera and new lens.

The Milky Way has a flare on the stars due to moisture on my camera lens, which I kept given the chaos of the situation. It took me 50 minutes to capture 14 usable milky way pictures because so many people had car lights on. 60 second exposures on the milky way, tracked in move shoot move, 10-15 seconds on the meteors.

This took about 8 hours to edit.

Milky way light pollution processed in GraXpert, foreground stitched in lightroom, milky way stitched in Kolor Autopano Giga, saturated and recolored in lightroom; everything finalized in photoshop, including the meteors. In total 19 layers and about 33 final shots used of the original 2723.

As someone in an extremely HCOL region, I haaaate insurance payouts to therapists. They choose a low number nationwide with no local adjustments, so almost no therapists near me accept the in-network insurance rate because they can’t live on that money here. It sucks.

One can recognize the flaws in more than one system. Clearly, US healthcare is broken in myriad ways, and universal care solves a lot of those issues. But I want to be clear eyed and real, universal care countries do have problems with healthcare that must be acknowledged.

Friends in Canada and Europe have talked to me about the absurdly long waits and lack of choice around getting medication for mental health issues due to a lack of available providers. I want universal care but I won’t lie, that scares me.

Good-faith concern on this issue would be going, "hmm, professional sports leagues should probably have some standards in place to ensure trans competitors aren't getting an unfair advantage," googling for 5 minutes, realizing every sports league already has those standards and dropping it.

My favorite depiction of the Trojan Horse, and the earliest known version. I love the windows, like an airplane, and that the windows go up the neck too.
Trojan horse depicted on the Mykonos vase ca. 675 BC, so around the time of the Odyssey and Iliad. Found with human bones inside (like the horse!) and now in the Archaeological Museum of Mykonos. Image shows the horse with little windows in its side so you can see the men waiting inside.

What I’d love to know is how much the effect correlated with stove use. In other words, is there ambient gas leakage when not cooking that is a significant issue or is it escaping gas only/mostly when cooking? I couldn’t find info on this, hopefully in a followup.

Fun game: if someone is being a smug prick about The Odyssey and talking about accuracy, try enthusiastically asking them what their favorite translation is. Do it friendly, not adversarial. You are so excited to hear which version they like best. Enjoy their panic as they try to bullshit out of it.
