Happiest of book birthdays to three gems: a funny and affecting look at a cat and a child, a soaring journey across the ocean, and a fascinating photo book about the lives of buffalo, Indigenous people, and the prairie.
Front cover of the picture book The New Cat by Stephanie V.W. Lucianovic and Chris Park. Simple, graphic illustrations depict a green-eyed cat with blue-black fur and blue-eyed baby with pale skin and blue-black cat ears looking at each other with the book's title place between them.Front cover of the picture book I Fly: An Airplane's Fantastic Flight by Kelly Rice Schmitt, illustrated by Jam Dong. Boldly colored art depicts an airplane with a worker in a cherry picker washing it, a pilot in the cockpit, and an air traffic controller pointing toward the pilot. A control tower and various buildings and airport vehicles are visible in the background.Front cover of Welcome Home, Buffalo: Restoring Connections Between People, Prairie, and Bison by Sandra Markle with Ferin Davis Anderson. The cover photo depicts a bison with fur ranging from golden to dark brown, appearing to stride through a prairie. It is in profile and facing to the right, conveying a feeling of motion toward the right-hand side of the book.

We celebrate Eva Marie Saint, who died today at 102. A #SagAftraMember since 1947, Saint won an Oscar for her film debut in 'On the Waterfront' and starred in 'North by Northwest.' An advocate for organized labor, she leaves an enduring example for generations of union members.

The government *still* isn’t tracking how often immigration agents detain U.S. citizens. We are. 500+ Americans have been handcuffed, held at gunpoint or held against their will in Trump’s second term. Our tally is almost certainly an undercount. THREAD (content warning: violence) ⬇️

Mulch should NOT touch the trunk, because it directs rain away from the tree, causes formation of adventitious roots above the root flare, & rots the bark. Mulch the root zone, but no mulch should touch the tree & keep their root flares above the soil line for healthier trees.
Graphic of a tree trunk divided in half with mowed grass all along the bottom. On the left side of the tree brown mulch is piled high against the trunk and the text there says, "No -Do not crowd the tree trunk with mulch. - Do not overmulch root systems. Too much mulch reduces oxygen and can suffocate roots. - Avoid incorrectly mulching trees to prevent problems that weaken them and open entry points for disease and insects."
On the right there is no mulch next to the trunk and a thin layer on top of the grass. The text there says, "How to mulch a tree. Yes. Keep mulch 1 to 3 inches away from the trunk. Apply mulch as far as the tree branches spread. Encourange root growth, conserve soil moisture, and minimize erosion with proper mulching."

Texas has little public land, and every time we go to one of the many state parks, it is slammed. Texans love being outdoors, and the parks department can't add these new parks fast enough.

This is a powerful recounting of the history of Puerto Rico, not taught in schools. Denise's lyrical poems describe significant events with an emotional punch that lingers long after the pages of the book are closed. A must-read for everyone who wants to learn real history.
