Speaking of nonfiction, WITNESS, a YA poetry anthology edited by Ari Tison and Ty Chapman, is out now! I had nothing to do with it (shoutout to Shaina Olmanson and @carolhinz.bsky.social), I'm just here to tell you it rocks. Kirkus and SLJ agree, via starred reviews! lernerbooks.com/shop/show/26...
Cover for WITNESS: POEMS TO ADDRESS THE PAST, PRESENT, AND FUTURE OF POLICING, edited by Ari Tison and Ty Chapman, with artwork by Damon Davis. Several merged brown faces, disembodied, float against a stark white background.

Happy book birthday to four great new releases! We have an incredible YA poetry anthology, animals in trees, dino-style community helpers, and a gorgeous picture book about a kid and their abuela.

The cover features what appears to be three overlapping faces with light brown eyes and skin colored in various shades of brown, peach, and a bit of purple.Front cover of a photo book called We Live in Trees! Amazing Animal Adaptations by Heather Alexander. It features a red-orange colored animal called a red panda, perched on a tree branch and appearing to look directly at the viewer, with mouth slightly open and a very cute pink tongue sticking out.Front cover of the picture book Dino-Helpers by Lisa Wheeler, illustrated by Barry Gott. It features two dinosaurs (one in firefighter gear and one in EMT gear) running across the cover and behind them a pterodactyl in police gear flying. A fire truck, ambulance, and tall city buildings are visible in the background.Front cover of the picture book Patchwork Memories by Monica Rojas, illustrated by Luisa Uribe. It features a grandmother with short white hair and peach-colored skin with a yellow shirt and purple cardigan looking off into the distance and smiling. To the right is a child (around age 8) with peach skin and brown hair in a chin-length bob wearing a yellow and white striped shirt and a light blue jean jacket. Behind them is a patchwork quilt with many different patterned squares of different colors. Along the bottom of the cover are delicate blue stitched flowers with green stems.

Today is a very special book birthday for TAKE IT APART by @kateywrites.bsky.social and Elizabet Vukovic. Katey worked SO hard over so many years to write a manuscript she felt would be a worth companion to BE A MAKER.
Front cover of the picture book Take It Apart by Katey Howes, illustrated by E.V. The letters of the title are made from a variety of objects, including bones, sticks, a paint tube, and various tools. Beneath the large title is a light-skinned girl with curly medium-brown hair wearing red glasses, a dark gray dress with light gray bursts, and red tights. She is using a paint scraper to scrape off what appears to be wallpaper beneath the letter "A" in Apart, which also appears to have been scraped off.

Happy book birthday to THE WORLD GAME by @johncoy23.bsky.social and Phùng Nguyên Quang. In the words of @thehornbook.bsky.social, it's a "lively celebration of soccer" and in my words, it's a perfect read to get ready for the World Cup this summer!
Front cover of the picture book The World Game: Soccer Circles the Globe. The title is in white text in the center of the cover, positioned over a globe in which the continents of Europe and Africa are visible. In the foreground are two kids about age 10--a girl with brown hair tied back in a ponytail and medium-toned brown-orange skin, wearing a red soccer jersey and shorts with tall red socks and white soccer cleats. She is kicking a soccer ball toward a blond-haired boy with light peach-toned skin who is wearing a purple soccer jersey, shorts, and socks with black cleats. He is suspended midair as if jumping to intercept the pass. Both kids have big smiles on their faces. They are positioned on a soccer field with a large goal net in the background and surrounding the sides and top of the cover are various buildings (ancient and modern) and landscapes evocative of various parts of the world, including the Colosseum in Rome and the Burj Al Arab in Dubai.

So thrilled to be publishing this NF picture book by Lesley Younge and Dwayne "Dubelyoo" Wright. Here's the announcement--and a peek at a few sketches!
Carol Hinz at Lerner/Millbrook has bought world rights to Soulforce by Lesley Younge (l.), illustrated by Dwayne "Dubelyoo" Wright. The nonfiction picture book sheds new light on how nonviolence was taught in the civil rights movement through the story of James Lawson and the campaign to desegregate downtown Nashville in 1960, which included young student activists John Lewis and Diane Nash. Publication is set for spring 2027; Stephen Barbara at InkWell Management represented the author, and Lori Nowicki at Painted Words represented the illustrator. Pencil sketches showing Reverend James Lawson, a Black man in his 30s with thick-framed glasses, from various angles as well as a small group of people gathered together, shown from mid-torso and up. Along the bottom are two very small, simple sketches with different views of Lawson speaking to groups of people.
