Last week, Dr. Brittney Cooper wrote about celebrating Juneteeth in crumbling empire that has never loved Black folks. Read the full piece here: f.mtr.cool/xmlkxoxmej Illustration by DeeAnn Willey.
an illustration of a Black grandmother shelling peas with one two little girls on a brick wall and one little girl doing her hairThis July, we will mark 250 years in an enshittifying empire, led by an emperor with no clothes. As empires go, the USA will go down in history as a young cocky upstart with lots of promises but very little staying power. We are, at best, as I told some friends recently, home to the vaunted and fallen Roman Empire, the “YNs” of empire. And we are rejecting a respectable turn to a quarter-zip phase by opting instead to be an empire for the streets, selling our wares to the highest bidder. The illusion of control is the first thing we grieve, when the lives and futures we wanted are snatched away. But we did not learn the lesson in 2001 or its aftermath, and we were invited to repeat that lesson in 2020, with even more loss here at home. We are a nation living in the aftermath of collective trauma, that a significant swath of citizens have met by choosing to go to war, with each other, with immigrants, with other nations, and with democracy itself. The Black cultural obsession with genealogy is nothing if not a ritualized practice of mourning and remembrance, a cultural response to understanding how to exist with structurally induced grief and the systemic disappearing of the names of our dead. There is healing in grieving the loss of our country. Healing in knowing who we’ve been, whose names we carry, what struggles and triumphs are in our DNA.
