Again: what we’re doing here is defining “understanding” as “the thing that humans do.” If a model is accurately absorbing new information, solving unsolved problems of incredible difficulty, engaging in detailed back-and-forths, but is not “understanding,” the word “understanding” has no meaning.

I usually attribute Trump's bizarre ramblings to either his psychopathic lying or his psychotic delusions, or some combination of the two. But this is just him being an economically illiterate moron.
President Trump Explains Trade Deficits:

“If we buy 2 billion dollars worth of Bananas from Brazil, we’re actually losing 2 billion dollars. So if we stop eating bananas, we actually save 2 billion dollars”.

It’s just simple Economics.

curious what the reaction will be like when a biologist laments that a disease was cured too quickly, without giving us a chance to really mull it over
On whether AI still needs human mathematicians:

We need proof digestion, which is explaining it in terms that human beings can understand and appreciate. Right now, the best digestion is still coming from human experts. Is that where we make our last stand? Are we going to be the great interpreters of the things that the machines do? I suspect that will be our role for a little while longer, that we will have that special skill of translating, though I do expect that will be surpassed by machines soon enough, too.

There are only a handful of Democrats in the country saying these things, and I absolutely agree it makes sense for trans people in their districts to feel like they’re stuck with bad options. But pretending this represents the entire party or means it’s better for Republicans to win is A LIE.

more millennium prize problems will fall soon www.nytimes.com/2026/09/10/s...
Andrew Curran @AndrewCurran_
X.com
OpenAl confirmed to the New York Times that they have made "substantial progress" on another Millennium Prize problem in the last five days, and are preparing to announce.
The rumors for the last 48 hours have been OpenAl solved the Hodge Conjecture, and that Anthropic has solved the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer Conjecture. Since Navier-Stokes rumors abound, so I was reluctant to post about either.
However, OpenAl's statement to the NYT now gives the Hodge rumors some very serious support.
In general people have not updated yet that the new unnamed OpenAl model, the one that finished training about two weeks ago, which I believe will be named Aeon, is massively better at math than Astra, which two weeks ago was the best in the world. Aeon solved Navier-Stokes in 88 hours, start to finish. Follow the trend line.
That means everything is on the table. Literally everything. And this does not end with math.
Please update. We are taking off.

The AI industry can outbid you for compute if it has to, and it can build compute in whatever counties do permit it. What this datacenter panic is mostly accomplishing is ensuring that datacenters will be built exclusively in the lowest-regulation places, and especially in marginalized communities.

The reality is this: progressives have an affective hatred of data centers because they don’t like the companies associated with them. Because of that they feel obligated to argue, absurdly, that the extremely substantial tax revenues from data centers are somehow poisoned or undesirable.

Wake up, babe. The Prime Minister just dropped “hydronym”.
The name Lake Ontario comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which, appropriately, means “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big”.

The name is more than 400 years old, predating both the Confederation of Canada and the Declaration of Independence of the United States of America.

We know that America is changing. Their trading relationships, their foreign policies, their national monuments, their hydronyms.

Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always.
