Out of the Summer break
World Pride 2026 brought with it a host of activities. Fully agenda's, the pride marches, the canal parade, the book lunch which was the culmination of a project called A Letter Full of Love to an Unknown Person. It was very rewarding to sit and share knowledge as well and exchange insights with this group of passionate and talented writers, and while the project has come to an end, it is my hope that these young writers will continue to practice and write.

In happier, less depressing news: My oncologist told me I am stable and there is no sign of active disease. I would love to be declared cancer free but this news is already a win. #fuckcancer

One of the things chemo stole from me: my memory of books I enjoyed reading. I look at them and am like: I remember you. But I actually don't really remember. Which is rather depressing. But also...on the brighter side, I can reread them and enjoy them as if it were the first time. #fuckcancer

Currently searching for early morning excursions. I’ve been told they have one major excursion right before the winter sets in. Then they come on land on one of the bog islands, drink hot chocolate and have some sandwiches and talk.

Sunset view right before the bat excursion.
A view of the nature reserve’s skyline as the sun has descended beneath the horizon. The light blue descends into the yellow orange glow.

We have seen bats flying after dark in the Nieuwkoopse nature reserve. Too fast to capture on film. But also…I think: you don’t need to catch everything on film to remember it. #adventuresinnature

They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today. www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...
“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

A lot of times, we see artists at the point of emergence or breakthrough. We don’t see the years of personal investment. The moments when a young person struggles with self doubt and the teacher becomes a mentor who says: let’s see how we can make this less daunting. #pianoteacher

I have a student who’s been with me for 7 years. It was sometimes slow going and I had a couple of frank conversations with the parents but she was determined to come to lessons. She’s started on Satie’s Gymnopedie 1 and Mozart’s C major sonata. #pianoteacher

I think I’ve reached the age too where I sit down with parents and tell them quite frankly that an investment of time and effort from parents and children is needed. Piano lessons are not magic and pianists don’t appear by chance. #pianoteacher

Another image from our visit to the Nieuwkoopse nature reserve. We saw no wild creatures this time. Only Ducks in the distance. Next time, we’ll try for the sunrise.
Cumulus clouds in a blue sky. Beneath the clouds waterlilies float on the water. the shoreline of moss and reeds shapes the horizon.

The thing about #writinginDutch: I’m sometimes unsure if I’m using the right turn of phrase or if I’m mixing up turns of phrases. Badgering the youngest son is part of this process as I don’t want to badger my language consultant until I’m done with this piece. #thirdlanguage

The urgency of the Moment
I had been discussing increasing the impact of Moving Love film project with ImpactMakers producer and director, Vera Born, and during this discussion, I pitched creating a number of workshop sessions based on visionary world-building principles. Making use of these principles, I proposed a quartet of sessions, first focusing on what the community of LGBTQ+ asylumseekers wants and needs, then moving outwards to gathering insight into what the larger Dutch public thinks, before going on to inviting policymakers, lobbyists and lawmakers.

Had quite an intense session with some lobbyists and politicians together with participants from the LGBTQ+ asylumseekers community. Hoping for change for safer asylum for vulnerable groups in the asylum system. #MovingLove
