I have a confession to make. The townhomes I & others spent most of a decade trying to legalize are popping up all over Oregon & elsewhere...and I love that...but they're a problem in one big way. (get ready for a twisty thread about the housing report @sightline.org just published)

An excellent start. To give you a sense of what's possible, NYC started with 14 speed cameras in 2014 and reached *2,277* by 2023. As NYC's DOT says: "When drivers believe that there could be a speed camera anywhere, they are discouraged from speeding everywhere."
Map of New York City showing thousands of speed cameras dotted almost uniformly across the city.

A bike lane and hundreds of affordable homes in Magnolia have both been delayed since 2008 thanks in significant part to SEPA. Getting people out of cars and building new affordable housing in the City are both good for the environment!

Graph showing that the number of applications to construct new housing has declined significantly since the MHA tax on renters was enacted while applications to build housing outside of MHA area state study. Both have started to decline since interest rates and inflation went up.

For those that don't know, the Fauntleroy Community Association has effectively had a veto power on any transportation or housing projects in southwest Seattle for half a century. They are the ones who prevent new bike infrastructure in Fauntleroy, the type that could've saved a life yesterday.

Do! This is a good reminder to me to also go; it's been a while.
Some background, in case you aren't familiar:
The FCA was founded by the waterfront-owning Lantz family in the '70s specifically to oppose ferry dock expansion. Susan Lantz, daughter of the founders, went on to marry Mike Dey. They also lived on the Sound, just south of the dock. Dey was president of the FCA for many years and remained hard-line on the "no dock expansion" stance, and Susan Lantz-Dey also served on the board. Mike Dey died last year. Susan's cousin Frank Immel is now FCA president; he owns Susan's parents' former home north of the ferry dock. So basically you have a single family running a fiefdom in Fauntleroy. It's amazing how much power they project from such a small bubble. Last I saw, FCA membership is ~100 households, but the board maintains a pretty strong grip on power.

Yes! Inaction is not neutral. I think EISes should have to consider the environmental impacts of *inaction*, not just the environmental impacts of action. If we *don't* build housing or transit, what will the consequences be? A balanced EIS would include that.

Waiting 15 minutes in SODO for the 50 is never great. But a fun new twist: the "CAUTION VEHICLE EXITING" alarm for the USPS annex parking lot is stuck on, so the other passengers and I get to listen to this for 15 minutes straight.

Hilariously, this timetable means that it will be faster for me to get from Alaska Junction to SEA at 3 AM than at 11 AM. (50 to SODO runs 24h, and the 570 between SODO and SEA is 5 minutes faster than Link) Blame the at-grade section I suppose.

Please write to them this weekend! It takes just a minute. Here's what I wrote:
Screenshot of a message. It says:

BILL:
SB 5156 - Concerning elevator standards in smaller apartment buildings. (For)
MESSAGE:
Please support this bill! It's critical that we get more affordable, ubiquitous elevators, especially in mid rise buildings that today wouldn't have an elevator at all.

And please REJECT Rep Peterson's amendment that would remove language about harmonizing with international standards. It nakedly caters to the elevator oligopoly in the US that makes our elevators uniquely expensive and rare.

Thanks

If our "environmental protection" frameworks can stop an affordable housing project but can't stop a detention center or a highway expansion we really need to start talk about ripping things up root and branch.

Here's what I wrote. You can do so too!
Screenshot of email reading:

Hello,

My name is Riley Avron, and I live in Washington. I oppose SB 5609 and ask that you do the same.

We are in a decades-long housing shortage precisely because we have made it slow, difficult, and expensive to build more homes in our state. Recognizing this, we categorically exempted infill development from SEPA, because it is unconditionally good for the environment: infill homes are more energy efficient, consume less of our agricultural land, and reduce or eliminate polluting commutes.

In fact, I live in such an infill development, and as a direct result, I drive a car only once every few months. All my daily needs are within a short walk or bus ride.

SB 5609 would undo that good policy, once again subjecting the projects we need and want to tens of thousands of dollars in costs (which will translate into yet higher home prices) and months of additional delay.

Please oppose it. Thank you.
