Image is a riff on the classic Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) logo except that (1) the Colonel – that inimitable, Southern Plantation owning, but benign looking white Colonel Sanders – is replaced by a not altogether white Jesus with an ironically accusatory and disbelieving-bordering-on-eye-rolling gaze and (2) the KFC has been replaced with JFC, as well it should be in this situation.

What ARE they thinking?!?

As a con law/federal courts scholar, it wasn't always true that when the first Monday of October rolled around I'd feel dread and gloom. But it's been that way for a long time, at least since Bush v Gore.

Loaf fresh from the oven (it’s still cracklin’!). #Sourdough cinnamon cranberry walnut bread. It is 65% home-milled whole grain wheat (red and white) at about 75% hydration. Looking forward to toasting this baby.

Excellent essay. We all have a take on polarization but I feel compelled to agree with Mason and her argument that polarization is the symptom in much the same way a fever is symptomatic of both a problem and an immune system reaction to that problem. Don’t treat the symptom! Fix the problem.

I’ve two favorites, no longer banned. Even today, owning a copy of either raises some eyebrows. Voltaire for the joy of it; Miller for the introspection and observations.
Image is one of many possible covers for Voltaire’s Candide. My copy in high school, well hidden from my mother (or so I believed) was was a slim red leather volume with gold stamped designs and gilt-edged pages. It FELT decadent. Image is a copy of Henry Miller’s Tropic of Cancer. The plain cover belies the rich, dense, sensually heady but always gritty writing found between the boards. A definitely formative read for someone in their late teens.

I thought Middlemarch was in my head for some reason other than George Eliot and narrative theory. When it happens is fine for me. I’m reading stuff I have stacked up and thought I’d poke my nose into Rebecca West’s Black Lamb and Grey Falcon. Was intrigued by it years ago via Robert D. Kaplan.

Re Jamelle Bouie’s video in an earlier comment, Spencer Cox is a living example of the kind of individual Mason associates with wanting to ‘treat the symptom’ rather than ‘fix the problem’. Cox sees polarization as a reason to return to the past (White, Xtian, Male dominated). We ain’t going back!

I found the idea that ‘polarization’ is a symptom and not ‘the problem’ particularly compelling. And, the radical idea that ‘fixing polarization’ is NOT the solution was clarified by the well-supported argument that polarization is analogous to a systemic immune response. VERY well argued.
