Dinner tonight at the FauxDobe Hacienda: scratch lasagne. Everything but the noodles and the cheese came out of our garden this season: tomatoes, eggplant, and zucchini. Even some of the herbs and spices were grown on our little, rocky suburban plot.

Here ya go: this was dinner. Lots of leftovers (unlike with risotto). C’mon over. Bring Chianti! Everything but the noodles and cheese came out of the garden: tomatoes, aubergines, and courgettes.

Managed to squeeze a #sourdough bake in today despite running on 4.5 hours of sleep. This one was started the night before and had a long, slow initial proof in the refrigerator. After getting it to wake up (I’m not certain I ever did), this was the result. Oh … and it delicious!

We picked the last five limes from our lime ‘bush’ today. Hoping for MANY more next year. Waiting for our one Meyer Lemon to ripen.

Ahoy, #MobyDickVirgins!! Yet more Whales IRL! This time from The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper, a wonderful read (particularly if you’re a notebooker) by Roland Allen (@zibaldoni.bsky.social). Here, the whalers’ logbooks are providing valuable climate change data. See the ALT text.

Image is a snippet of text from p. 323 of The Notebook: A History of Thinking on Paper, by Roland Allen, Chapter 26, “Non-Trivial: Climate Logs 1850s–Present.” The chapter is a discussion of the Old Weather Project which takes old weather data from ships’ logbooks and funnels that data to NOAA for climate modeling. This bit considers the data available in the logs of independent whalers who hunted bowhead whales at the edges of the icepacks. The text reads:

“The Old Weather team uses no fewer than twenty-seven different spreadsheet formats to deal with this variety, and when independent whaling ships are factored into the mix, it becomes messier still. Whalers' data can be particularly valuable, as they hunted bowhead whales, which feed at the edge of the sea ice, so their logs tell us precisely how far south it extended. But they kept logs much less systematically - on one whaler, the Fleetwing, the duty fell to the captain's fourteen-year-old daughter, who covered the weather, the ice pack, the ship's catch and her needlework in equal detail, and in an informal style that thumbs its teenage nose at the very notion of digital workflow.”

The image is a full-color caricature of Stephen Miller in something resembling the attitude of the Statue of Liberty. But in this instance, the torch of liberty is replace with a Tiki torch (made infamous by the Unite the Right ‘protestors’); the tabula ansata, signaling the rule of law, is replaced with a copy of the U.S. Immigration Policy; and, rather than looking up in pride, Miller is looking down on those he deems less than himself, an attitude made apparent by the KKK robe he wears.

Loaf fresh from the oven (it’s still cracklin’!). #Sourdough cinnamon cranberry walnut bread. It is 65% home-milled whole grain wheat (red and white) at about 75% hydration. Looking forward to toasting this baby.

I’ve two favorites, no longer banned. Even today, owning a copy of either raises some eyebrows. Voltaire for the joy of it; Miller for the introspection and observations.
