There are precious few certainties in life, yet I think we can *all* agree that were "The Matrix" made today, the role of Mouse would have been played by Pete Davidson.

Excited about Geno's return to the Mariners, but bringing in my love of Vincent Price.
Vincent Price as Dr. Phibes in a screengrab from "The Abominable Dr. Phibes," with a skeletal mask, silky white robe and pants, and white gloves. He is seating at an organ with red translucent panels, and is turned looking back at us. At the bottom is the text, "GOOD PHIBES ONLY" in Seattle Mariner teal.

Amazing screening tonight at the mostly-full, 999-seat Geffen Theater at the Academy! My first time seeing my favorite director in person, and my first opportunity to see a favorite film on the big screen since I saw it in '99.
A slide on the screen of the David Geffen Theater at the Academy Museum for tonight's screening. There's a picture of Al Pacino and Russell Crowe talking in a car in a screengrab from the film. The slide reads:
"BRANCH SELECTS
"The Insider in 35mm
"Selected by the Writers Branch
"Intro video:
"Writers: Eric Roth and Michael Mann
"In person:
"Director Michael Mann and
"Dana Stevens, Governor, Writers Branch

I always go back and forth between Schifrin and Goldsmith as the greatest film composer, but really, only Schifrin in all the history of cinema made percussion and brass work for the image better than *anyone* before or after him, and likely anyone in the foreseeable future.

I can't find any protests tonight, and I don't know where to direct my fury that this absurd country decided to simply throw in the towel 366 days before the tricentennial for no other reason than to turn the billionaires into trillionaires just for funsies.

Hard agree We shouldn't be referring to these people as "Federal agents" until we get proof that they actually are that While we're at it, we should stop saying people are being "arrested" when they are being kidnapped And stop saying "deported" if they're being extrajudicially rendered

I did my best to compile as many protest safety notes as possible into a one page foldout zine! Coincidentally…it seems the file has breached containment…like it’s available for anyone to print or hand out 👀⚖️ toonyart.com/s/PSZine.pdf
The cover spread from a one page zine printout. The left (back cover) features images of a scale and gavel, with notes on First Amendment and filming rights, and the advice to “shut the fuck up.”

On the right is the cover, a megaphone with the title text “PROTEST SAFELY.” Behind it are faceless protestors. The subtitle notes, “A brief collection of tips from around the internet.”A spread from one page zine printout.
On the left is an illustration of a protestor with the title “What to Wear,” including a helmet, goggles, ear plugs, gloves, a mask, a backpack, and layers/long sleeves/pants. Each have additional notes explaining their use.

On the right is “What to Bring,” featuring illustrations of a backpack, money, water bottles, a mask, a granola bar and bag of trail mix, a first aid kit, folded shirt and pants, and an ID, with “DIY Defense” listed underneath it showing one protestor using a luggage case, one holding a trash can lid, and one using an open umbrella as a shield.A spread from one page zine printout.
On the left is “Protect Your Identity,” advising to cover up identifying features, avoiding photography of protesters, deactivating biometric phone-unlocking tools, and writing emergency contact and counsel numbers on your arm.

On the right is “Be Like Water,” the motto of the 2019 Hong Kong protests, and the text “BEWARE THE BAIT” with images of a palette of bricks and a masked man holding a crowbar toward a protestor with a sign, “Psst, free crowbar?” encouraging the reader not to engage with traps and undercover agents.A spread from one page zine printout featuring the hazards of protest opposition, including tear gas, rubber bullets, and LRAD sound cannons and flash bangs. Caution tape images accompany the text explaining the dangers of each, how to flush out eyes that have been maced/etc, and how to extinguish a gas canister with a traffic cone.

And if you're at a protest and things start to get too scary, listen to your own gut. Don't do things just because some stranger or some "leader" with a megaphone gives an order. You feel sketched out? Don't do it. Don't march into that tunnel. Don't kneel in front of cops. Just bug out.

Hey everyone, you want to know a fun factoid? Almost all of the federal agents currently in LA aren’t local, which means they’re staying at a hotel somewhere. Hotels have fire alarms. Wanna know another fun fact? If protests start popping off in other states, they can’t be everywhere at once.

Looking down at Tom Cruise hanging on to the outside of the Burj Khalifa with the street many, many, many floors down in the distance, in a screengrab from "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol."Tuesday Weld on the left and James Caan on the right at a window-side booth at a cafe, in conversation, in a screengrab from "Thief."David Strathairn, playing a blind man, grinning while information from a dangerous MacGuffin reflects on his darkened glasses, in a screengrab from "Sneakers."Alan Rickman, looking vaguely concerned, talking into a walkie-talkie, in a screengrab from "Die Hard."

I started a monthly book club but for cult films, using Peary's "Cult Movies" books and Tobias' "New Cult Canon" lists. Just wrapped this month's discussion, with Glazer's "Under the Skin" and Roeg's "The Man Who Fell to Earth." It went wide enough to encompass the "Westphall Theory," so good talk!
