Two thing can be true. The WH kicking out media it doesn’t like is absolutely a First Amendment violation. And There is little journalism of value to be found in the highly controlled, substance-free halls of power—wall-to-wall navel-gazing about one’s access probably being of the least value.

I get uncomfortable when orgs and businesses want to commission "zines" because usually what they are asking for is not a zine but a pamphlet/booklet that they don't want to pay professional rates for. It devalues publishing professionals and diminishes the meaning of zines.

It also opens the door to actual traffickers or possessors of CSAM to claim everything is AI generated when they actually had a child in their basement they exploited for a year. It encourages killing child victims, so recognition to a real child can’t be matched in court.

I refuse to believe that a lot of people don’t understand that AI images/videos are generated off of existing real content. This means that this ‘American right’ allows anyone to type in a prompt of child abuse, wait for a computer to mash 100s of real victims together, and spit out a new image.

Woke up to this news and I’m beyond disgusted. It’s a US *constitutional right* now to create and own ‘CSAM,’ as long as it was made with AI?? AI gen images are built from real images, of real children. This directly re-exploits every single CSAM survivor. (More in 🧵) #abolition #trafficking
A federal judge has ruled that the First Amendment protects an individual's right to privately possess child sexual abuse content created using Al if it does not depict a real person and remains in the home.
On Tuesday, Judge John Z. Lee of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 7th District ruled that the First Amendment protects an individual's right to privately possess images or videos of child sexual abuse created using artificial intelligence if the material does not depict a real person and remains in the home. In his ruling, Judge Lee urged the Supreme Court to reconsider the issue of virtual abuse material of children in the age of Al, suggesting that technological advances complicate existing legal precedent.
The case Lee ruled on came about in 2024 when the Department of Justice brought charges against Steven Anderegg, alleging that he used Al to create thousands of explicit images of children. He was accused of breaking federal obscenity laws by producing, distributing and possessing obscene visual depictions of minors engaged in sexually explicit conduct. Anderegg sought to have the possession and production charges dismissed under the First Amendment. Last year, a judge in the Western District of Wisconsin agreed to dismiss the possession charge, prompting the federal prosecutors to appeal.
Lee, in his ruling upholding the lower court's decision, cited the precedent set by Supreme Court rulings from 1969 and 2002. One held that individuals have a right to possess obscenity in the privacy of their home. The other found that "virtual" child sexual abuse material, not depicting a real person is not child pornography.

"The Board of CPJ will formally change its definition of who qualifies as a journalist, to broadly exclude slain Palestinian and Lebanese journalists who worked for government-funded media outlets." From Mohammed El-Kurd (editor-at-large at Mondoweiss.)
Mohammed El-Kurd
@m7mdkurd

NEW: The Board of Directors at the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) will formally change its definition of who qualifies as a journalist, to broadly exclude slain Palestinian and Lebanese journalists who worked for government-funded media outlets. Israeli, American, and Ukrainian journalists who work for state-funded outlets or are embedded with the military will remain recognized as journalists, of course.

The move was catalyzed to appease the right-wing Zionist rag The Free Beacon, which has repeatedly accused Palestinian and Lebanese journalists of being undercover militants or used their political opinions or affiliations as justification for their killing by the IOF.

This is a racist scandal of massive proportions for everyone involved, and it makes a mockery of the purported mission of the organization. It is absolutely abhorrent that the organization’s resources are wasted on this cowardly witch-hunt, at a moment in history that is the deadliest for journalists, especially in Palestine and Lebanon.

2:52 PM · Jun 28, 2026
Mohammed El-Kurd
@m7mdkurd

NEW: Sources say that CPJ has put together a “special task force” to “reexamine the question of ‘Who is a Journalist?’” (direct language). The main objective of the task force is to explore excluding journalists working for “state-backed propaganda outlets and terror-affiliated organizations” from their database, as well as journalists who exhibit actions and behaviors that the organization finds to be discrediting. Essentially, CPJ is saying you’re not a journalist unless you’re politically aligned with us.
