that's a thought that occurred to me too. capitalism didn't just eat the world, it also ate itself. private sector entities became less efficient and less capable at doing anything. instead of hyper-intelligent ais and luxury resort space stations we got hallucinating chatbots and exploding rockets

OMG, Second Life. I almost successfully blocked that out. One school where I worked wasted a year building a virtual financial aid office so students could send their avatars to talk with the financial aid advisor's avatar, which absolutely no students did. So, more work for the staff for nothing.
