also what will most likely happen is that trump, who is not capable carrying out his threats, will change the deadline he made up, citing diplomatic progress he also made up, and then it will be breathlessly reported as high-stakes diplomacy rather than the moron president thrashing around

It feels like it's been impossible to get people outside of higher ed to understand that eliminating staff/programs/majors is primarily an ideological project, whatever claims are made about finances. What's happened at the Post is what's been happening in higher ed for ages.

Recently the @historians.org Council vetoed member resolutions that would have committed AHA to defense of academic freedom. In doing so, the org relayed their stance that its federal underwriters-not historians themselves-determine our discipline's limits. 🔗⬇️ www.insidehighered.com/opinion/view...

Historians Must Reclaim AHA (opinion)
Two recent vetoes by the association’s governing council raise the question of who defines what counts as “history.”

Crucial win in the battle for academic freedom!!!💥💥💥I must say, I didn't expect this! I'm hugely relieved at this positive development on TX SB 37 that allows us to continue teaching about the history of race, gender, inequality, ethnicity...in other words, history. #AFT #unions #skystorians

a society where "bad immigrants" are demonised is a society where no immigrant can truly feel welcome, because aren't we all just one wrong turn or accident away from being unemployed? on disability benefits? unable to care for our children without state help? just no such thing as a safe immigrant

Texas Senate approves bill that could reshape how history and race are taught in state universities
An overhauled version of Senate Bill 37 would also allow anyone to file complaints that could lead schools to lose funds.

Lots of sudden interest in Daniel Immerwahr's map of the "Greater United States," and that's all well and good, but I'm personally partial to Bill Rankin's master map of the Territories of the US, which more fully captures the patchwork of jurisdictions (including, crucially, military installations)
