just to clarify: he wasnt punished. he’s not a victim of the carceral state or retributive justice or the sex offender registry he is a privileged white guy who made some videos and said nice things about queer people, and got away with a sex crime he admitted to only after a record of it came out

this essay closes with this paragraph. i would like you to read that paragraph, and while you do, just repeat the phrase, 'he raped his girlfriend while she was unconscious' in your head see how much this flowery, forgiving language holds up

The more arduous position is to leave several truths standing alongside one another, where my anger at the situation, the internet discourse, and Jacob Geller’s actions can coexist. Somewhere between absolution and annihilation, there has to be a moral vocabulary capable of describing what happens after a human being does something unforgivable and nevertheless remains human. I don’t know what that vocabulary is yet; I only know that I desperately want us to keep looking for it.

I don’t know what restorative justice looks like in a case like this. I don’t know what it means to hold someone accountable. But I do know how painful it is to see someone admit to doing sexual violence against someone else and a crowd of people immediately rush to minimize it as a youthful mistake

Simply way too soon to write this article. For all we know right now, he could disappear forever or just keep uploading videos monthly like nothing happened. A statement from the victim could be posted tomorrow or never. There could be 0 or 20 other victims currently working up the courage to speak.
