After putting a call out for suggestions (and getting some excellent ones) I opened one of the library apps to find Miss Percy's Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons by @quenbyolson.bsky.social was finally there. So I have been enjoying that.

"How have you been, Quen?" So! My mom had a stroke over the winter and I'm her full-time caretaker. I'm pulling my book that had been on submission for the last year off submission at the end of this month and self-publishing it. Miss Percy went a little bit viral in June.

I need you to know that one of the best things you can do for an author you love is to talk about their books. This post popped up in r/cozyfantasy this week, and I had one of the best sales weeks I've had in a while. Likely because of this post. If there's a book you love, shout about it.
A post in r/cozyfantasy titled "Miss Percy's Pocket Guide to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons is my soul book!" with the text below of: First of all, I cannot understand why Quenby Olson isn't more famous. She's an amazing writer! I am almost halfway through the book and I have been thoroughly entertained and enchanted since page one. I have zero criticisms of this book. It's like it was written for me!

Most here have probably read it, but I cannot praise what I've read so far highly enough! I've laughed out loud numerous times and have had a smile on my face for most of it. I think it is especially because Miss Percy is "of a certain age" (as am I) and so I identify with her plight in general.

I just cannot get over how much I love the writing and voice. I'm going to read some of Quenby Olson's Regency romances because I like her writing so much.

Anyway, {Miss Percy's Pocket Guide (to the Care and Feeding of British Dragons) by Quenby Olson}

Not sure if I did that right, but I tried.

I've been working on making dragon scale gloves where the scales go past the thumb hole and down into the wrist and beyond, and I think I've finally got the pattern down pat. One more pair after these, and I think I'll trust myself to write the pattern down.

Anyway, I'm nearly 60k through my next book (NO, not the cozy horror best friends fighting vampires one, that's still on submission) and this one is not cozy at all. Sorry, people.
Blood-pooled eyes gaze at me, above a noseless face and a mouth still shaped by the same wretched, silent scream. Ruined clothes and skin hang from his limbs in shreds. Limbs that reach towards me, fingers of bone and naked sinew spreading apart as though to grasp me by the throat and crush the life from my lungs before I can think to call out for help.

Huzzah! Enchanting the Fae Queen is out in North America today, & I've written about it here: www.stephanieburgis.com/2026/01/ench... I can't wait for you all to watch my mischievous fae queen and stoic, noble general spar their way through a lethal fae tournament to true love! #romancelandia
The illustrated cover for Enchanting the Fae Queen, by Stephanie Burgis, shows a mischievously grinning woman with long blonde curls, a moonstone crown, a pink dress and bare feet, sitting perched in a tree teasing the uniformed general who stands before her, his expression determined and one of his hands around her closest leg while she pokes his strong nose with one finger. Vines of leaves sweep magically out from the tree around her to draw him towards her. The tagline reads: All’s fae in love and war.
Around and beneath the cover image is this text, connected by arrows to different parts of the cover image: She's a scandalous seductress; he's famously moral, virtuous and chaste; “Yes, I may kill him, but I’ll kill anyone else who tries”; Enemies to lovers; buy now.

I am currently prepping for homeschooling four kids next week, shifting one kid over to an online charter school (so paperwork, transcripts, evaluation reports, etc.), while also trying to keep the house from falling into chaos, take care of myself, etc. Every word written in there is a win.

I think one of the harder parts of having a book out on submission - having come from self-publishing - is the wait. If I had decided to publish this book on my own (and I still might if there aren't any bites) it would likely be up for pre-order already. There'd be a cover. It would be ready to go.

The hardest part about being an author is figuring out how to market your books in a social media post with a character limit. Cake. Baby Dragons. Found Family. Middle-aged main characters. Bonnets. And... done!

A soft start to our school year today. Fitting, then, that the temperature dropped twenty degrees from yesterday, giving the day a cool, cloudy vibe. News, read alouds (picking up Inkheart where we left off) and math and spelling, just to get our brains ticking before we go full force in September.

It's interesting how I class myself as a pantser because I rarely put any notes or outlines down to paper. But I've spent the last couple weeks letting my new story kind of... percolate in my head, moving pieces around without really thinking about it, and that is a kind of outlining, really.
