I’m TRULY thrilled to share my ✨debut✨ short story with you all. My zoomies are 15/10. Do Not Walk Near the River, published at Gavagai, inspired by the terrifying Egyptian folktale of the river djinn En Naddaha. Free to read, no account required. ✨ Read here ✨ gavagai.com/posts/6199

A photo of a woman with black hair, pale skin, and a white dress emerging from the water. Text below the photo says: Do Not Walk Near the River (title) by Noor Lovelace (author).

The first paragraph follows:

I had devoured three of Abu Tarek's handsome sons before he had captured me in a filigree box and buried it beneath Aswan. A man's legacy is invaluable, so l understood his frustration. But could you blame the crocodile for hunting the gazelle? I had only acted upon my nature, and the villages along the Nile warned young men not to walk near the river.
They warned their sons about me.

I am going to finish my current read tonight. I packed most of my books but I tried to anticipate what I would want to read next so I left a handful out. My mood reader brain, however, is not interested in any of them. That means I get to go to the bookstore tomorrow, right?

As I edit my fourth book, I’ve noticed a pattern: in every book, I love to give an absolute hot mess of a man some really nice clothes—and then he immediately ruins them because the plot lands on him and he doesn’t cope well. It’s so fun. These men are in shambles, and their clothes suffer for it 😃
