Credit needs to go to what was inspiring the Quakers back then, the teachings of a simple Galilean teacher. Those same teachings got twisted away from equality, truth, peace, etc., towards a male hierarchy used to control people that became the institutional church.

Quakerism originally rejected all holy days, why do modern Christian Quakers celebrate the Nativity and Easter but not the Ascension? The answer is cultural drift & money, not theology. Christmas & Easter have massive cultural, finalncial and social pull. The Ascension, lacks commercial viability.

I guess Pentecost is a key moment for Quaker theology and the Ascension occurs as a precursor to this. The Risen Christ ascends in his particularity in order to be present universally. He ascends in his resurrected Jewish flesh in order to be poured out on all flesh.

You are observing the logical outcome of early Quakerism’s complete deconstruction of traditional Church mechanics. Quaker theology is built on the opposite mechanism, not the disappearance of Jesus, but the immediate, continuous, unmediated presence of Christ within the individual the Inward Light.

The national Silent Quaker Walking Vigil for Peace will take place in London on Saturday 19 September 2026, the weekend closest to the United Nations International Day of Peace.

The vigil has grown out of conversations and planning amongst Friends from across Britain, supported by the national Faith in Action Team, and seeks to offer a visible, prayerful Quaker witness for peace in our current times.

The walk will begin and end with Meeting for Worship and will take place silently and at a gentle pace. A circular route is planned, beginning and ending in Victoria Embankment Gardens, with a pause midway for worship, likely outside St Martin-in-the-Fields. Final details are still being confirmed as permissions are arranged with Westminster Council and the police.

The vigil is intended to be family friendly, and children and young people are warmly welcome.

Friends intending to come are encouraged to sign up via: quakervigilforpeace@gmail.com

For Friends, one of the most important ways in which individual freedom and agency is directly related to communal order and identity is through the discernment and application of gifts and ministries. It is interesting to note that, at root, the governance of the Quaker community has represented a unique and distinctive combination of theocracy, where God is meant to rule in and through the group, and anarchy, where all human power and authority is surrendered, so that this divine rule is not constrained or forsaken.
