A while back I wrote about this kind of "let the past be the past" forgiveness culture that often rears its head when stuff done a long time ago comes to light. Like in a lot of sexual assault cases. www.selfawaresoup.com/2023/06/24/i...
Forgiveness especially is something I struggle with. It’s valued highly in our society and people who forgive unbelievable atrocities done to them are publicly praised for it and paraded around like something everyone should aspire to. There’s also a widely shared belief that after enough time has passed, you should just “let things go”. Both never made sense to me. Why should abuse and violence be forgotten or forgiven simply by letting time pass? The people responsible have done nothing to justify that and they have faced zero consequences. And by consequences I don’t mean punishment. I mean seeing and acknowledging the consequences of their actions in the world, they pain they have caused and the years of other people’s lifetime they have irrevocably stolen. They got to simply move on with their lives while I didn’t. I can’t and don’t want to do anything about that, but I also can’t forgive or forget.

It’s obviously extremely easy to hurt men’s tender feelings when we talk about rape culture (we’re talking about them or their buddies after all) but what will it take to make them feel afraid?

idk like i'm not trying to be "exclusionary" i'm just saying it's starting to get uncomfortable how much people are laser-focused on making sure sexual availability is never COMPLETELY off the table, at the cost of eliding everything else including and especially extremely high SA rates, you get me?

this thought spurred today by seeing people going on about how lesbians can have sex with men too, and replies going "yeah just like aces are often the biggest sluts you know!" and tbh those talking points DO feel similar, but not in the way the people going on about it intended, i think

but the result is that i have had people come onto me irl and have reasoned, explicitly in their appeals, that "well aces can have sex too!" the message allos receive is that asexuals are sexually available regardless of their stated identities and experiences. it becomes compulsory sexuality

the other reason being of course a valid and good desire to not make aces who do choose to have sex feel invalidated or excluded or like they're "not ace enough" etc., because they ARE a small minority within the community, and that's completely understandable, i get why this is important

i realize that we aces are frequently the first to insist we're not prudes, we're not frigid, not puriteens, we're not trying to "trojan horse christian puritanism into queer spaces," and all the other things we're frequently accused of & it's one reason this talking point tends to get foregrounded

the majority asexuals who report having sex say they do it to make an allo partner happy. not so much because aces are actually *more* sexually available than anyone else

tbh it bothers me that almost the only thing allos know about asexuality is that "ace people can have sex too! ace people are often the biggest sluts you know!" & they never acknowledge or even know that like 79% of aces report being sexually assaulted but only like 2% report having voluntary sex

The simple fact is that the average Westerner enjoys a much higher standard of living by sucking the Third World dry, but now because bourgeoisie's rapacious gaze has turned inward to the metropole, the failchildren of the hegemony are throwing tantrums and demanding they never see a brown again.

The bare facts of the West's dependency on immigrant labour and neocolonialism are always elided in these discourses. Counter-arguments always invoke a benevolent, kind West magnanimously opening up its doors to the world's poor, graciously offering back a fraction of their stolen wealth.

I find it infuriating that nations who for decades have profited off the exploitation of immigrant labour, who have indeed engineered the conditions for that exploitation through making the countries of origin nigh unliveable, now dare to turn around and call migrants a drain. Absolutely maddening.

And there is something deeply unpleasant about that kind of person. About a person, in this case a writer no less, who is constitutionally incapable of imagining a better world. I mean, the world she did imagine is as bad as this one, and even worse in some respects (slavery is still a thing in it).

Ursula Le Guin was like: “We live in capitalism. Its power seems inescapable—so did the divine right of kings.” Whereas the JK Rowling ethos is more like: “We live under capitalism and the British class [caste] system and these facts are as immutable as gender.”

Ursula Le Guin was in many ways the anti-Rowling. She was an anarchist & not an establishment flunky, she had a strong moral sense instead of being a self-aggrandising bourgeois, & most importantly she actually knew how to write.

this isn't conjecture. This is the EXACT reason why one of the quickest ways to shut down a fash with a camera is to start shouting: "this video is brought to you by SquareSpace!" INSTANT demonitization. Because the streaming/social platforms already protect their advertisers more than the state.

Excellent analysis. There is no sugarcoating what is happening here in Germany. Most of the political centre is enabling if not actively supporting the rise of fascism. The Left‘s remarkable performance in the Berlin elections is not being heralded as an earthquake but treated as a threat.

on the contrary, there are forms and practices of violence, terror, and humiliation we as a society have agreed are reserved specifically for children's bodies. the child's body is the archetypal site of legitimate, disciplinary violence. violence BECOMES socially legitimate when done to a child.

there's a popular, deeply ingrained myth that children are a uniquely "protected" class, sheltered from the harsh realities of the world, coddled, that any act of violence against them is regarded as uniquely horrifying and galvanizing instant universal outrage, but it's not borne out by reality

anyway food for thought: if an adult man were forced by his boss to bend over, possibly lower his pants, and allow himself to be struck painfully on the buttocks with a hard wooden paddle, spoon, belt, or hand, would that be: a) not just assault but *sexual* assault or b) "necessary discipline"

as long as we continue to concede that sexual violence (or the desire to commit it) is a problem of individual "deviance" or mental affliction instead of structural rape culture, we will be required to come up with some kind of bioesssentialist explanation for the cis male majority. so stop it pls.

CW: CSA - the desire for biospychological naturalist explanations is born out of a reluctance to acknowledge that cis male supremacy is the context in which sexual violence against children occurs, the context that shapes it, that produces desire, that inscribes certain bodies with (sexual) meaning

there is no naturalist/biological/medical explanation for the cis male majority. it's patriarchy, folks. it's socially constructed patterns of incitement to desire. sexology as a field is like evopsych, it's whole function is to naturalize social forces by attributing them to biopsychological causes
