This week, the Trump administration released a new bombshell. In outlining how it will govern the 2030 decennial census, the Census Bureau has indicated that it plans to stop collecting data about race and only count a subset of the population, contrary to what the constitution requires. This is part of the “residence rules” that the Census Bureau produces in the middle of the decade to finalize its operational plan. While purportedly intended to make the census “colorblind” and to protect the privacy of respondents, these proposed changes to the residence rules will ensure that anti-discrimination laws – such as the Voting Rights Act – that are anchored to the census data can’t be enforced

A nuclear reactor is being installed a mile underground in Kansas ->New Scientist | More on "Underground nuclear reactor innovation" at BigEarthData.ai

A nuclear reactor is being installed a mile underground in Kansas
Nuclear power start-up Deep Fission wants to put a reactor where no reactor has gone before: a mile underground. The California-based company received safety approval for its reactor design from the US Department of Energy earlier this month, and is preparing the site for its commercial pilot outside Parsons, a small city in south-east Kansas. The company hopes that placing a reactor deep underground will cut installation and operational costs, particularly since the bedrock can provide natural containment and pressure for the reactor. This eliminates the need for a heavy-duty concrete containment dome like those that enclose conventional nuclear reactors, which account for a significant portion of their cost and the time it takes to build them. But independent engineers say it is unclear how successful the approach will be. Deep Fission has already drilled a 1830-metre data-collection well, and will soon begin drilling a 762-metre proof-of-concept borehole. Its next phase will involve installing the reactor canister, heat exchanger and other components into the borehole, with a nuclear demonstration targeted for 2027. The company’s Gravity reactor uses one of the most common nuclear technologies: a pressurised water reactor, which runs on standard low-enriched uranium fuel and is water-cooled. It is...

AI data center builder Fluidstack raises $830M at $7.5B valuation
Fluidstack Ltd., a startup helping Anthropic PBC build artificial intelligence data centers, has raised $830 million in funding. The company announced the Series A round on Monday. The lead investor was Situational Awareness, an AI-focused fund backed by Stripe Inc.’s founders. The investment values Fluidstack at $7.5 billion. Fluidstack entered the limelight last November when it partnered with Anthropic on a large-scale data center construction project. The companies plan to build $50 billion worth of AI infrastructure in the U.S. over the next few years. At the time of the announcement, Anthropic stated that the first facilities would come online in 2026. Fluidstack’s website doesn’t provide a detailed overview of its offerings. However, the dozens of job postings on the company’s openings page make it possible to piece together a picture of its value proposition. Multi-gigawatt data center construction projects currently take several years to complete. Fluidstack hopes to reduce construction times to six months. It plans to achieve that speedup by assembling customer facilities from prefabricated, or factory-made, modules. Companies usually ship a data center’s building blocks to their construction site and assemble the components on the premises. The workflow involves a significant amount of manual work. Moving some...

Climate Change Is a Women's Health Crisis-Future Doctors Must Act
This article was exclusively written for The European Sting by Ms. Cecilia Petio, a medical student at the University of Bologna, Italy. She is affiliated with the International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), cordial partner of The Sting. The opinions expressed in this piece belong strictly to the writer and do not necessarily reflect IFMSA’s view on the topic, nor The European Sting’s one. Climate Change and Women’s Health: A Call to Action for the Next Generation of Healthcare ProfessionalsClimate change is often discussed in terms of temperatures, storms, or economic loss. Yet its most profound consequence is often overlooked: its impact on women’s health. As future healthcare professionals, we must recognize this urgent issue—not only as doctors but as advocates for equity and resilience. Women, particularly in vulnerable communities, face disproportionate health risks from climate change due to biological, social, and structural factors. One of the clearest intersections lies in maternal and reproductive health. Exposure to extreme heat, air pollution, and climate-related disasters has been linked to preterm birth, low birth weight, hypertensive disorders, and stillbirth (WHO, 2023). Heat stress during pregnancy increases physiological strain, while air pollution contributes to complications for both mother and fetus. Climate change...

Brooklyn Rivera, defender of Nicaragua's Indigenous lands, dies in detention - news
La Moskitia, on Nicaragua’s Caribbean coast, is often treated in Managua as a frontier: timber, gold, cattle, rivers, votes, and military concern. To the Miskitu, Sumu-Mayangna, Rama, Garífuna, and Creole peoples who live there, it is older than the Nicaraguan state. Its forests, savannas, rivers, and marine life are part of a political claim as well as a homeland. The demand has long been plain enough: land, autonomy, and a say over what happens there. Brooklyn Rivera Bryan spent most of his life carrying that demand into war, negotiation, electoral politics, exile, and prison. Known in Miskitu communities as Taupla Brooklyn, he died on May 30th, aged 73, in the custody of Daniel Ortega’s government. He had been detained since September 2023. For months the government denied holding him. It later acknowledged his imprisonment. No public trial was held. His family was denied visits. His public life began after the Sandinista revolution of 1979, when the new government sought to draw the Atlantic Coast into a national project directed from the Pacific. The Miskitu experience of that project was marked by surveillance, arrests, violence, and forced displacement. In 1981 Rivera was arrested while leading Misurasata, an Indigenous organization whose name...

The Iran war's toll on the Indo-Pacific
The Iran war is hitting the Indo-Pacific’s most fragile economies hard. The shock is travelling through multiple channels at once: energy, food, financial stress, and political instability. South Asia is the most exposed. Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka import nearly all their crude oil from the Gulf and depend on oil and gas for more than half of their energy mix. All three hold less than a month in fuel reserves. In response, governments have resorted to extreme measures: four-day working weeks, fuel rationing at petrol stations, and rolling blackouts. Others are reminiscent of the pandemic: return to remote schooling and work-from-home orders. The Philippines is as dependent on crude oil as South Asia and has followed suit in enforcing similar restrictions. By contrast, smaller players like Cambodia and Laos lack domestic refining capacity and do not directly import crude oil from the Gulf. However, they are more exposed due to their reliance on refined oil imports from neighbouring countries. Laos relies on Thailand for almost all of its refined oil imports, Cambodia has turned to Malaysia and Singapore after Vietnam and China implemented export restrictions. Food security is another major pressure point. Roughly a third of the raw materials...
