The Catholic bishops of Alberta have released a pastoral letter related to the Alberta Independence referendum. The letter stops short of endorsing a yes or no (common in bishops' letters in the US and Canada) but the key considerations lean in a fairly obvious direction. caedm.ca/catholic-bis...

Betting your entire climate change strategy on carbon capture, which has been the whole approach of Carney's government, is literally betting on science fiction. There are zero--none, nada, zilch--examples of this technology being deployed at scale to reduce national emissions.

I am begging Canadians to connect the very bad climate effects we're increasingly experiencing to decisions that a currently remarkably popular government is pursuing.

Exactly, the threat isn't AI superintelligence, it's human abdication of our own intelligence in favor of the fantasies of rich tech bros. Anyway we should really just not have this stuff. On top of all the other issues, there's no future where people are wise enough to mitigate these situations.

What if caring about people's material needs *is* a moral and ethical story about how to live together in this moment? I take it this is what drives the popularity of Mamdani and others, that people are willing to allow themselves a brief risk of hope that a politician might do something good.

An individual in Canada used ChatGPT for eight months to plan one of the country’s worst mass shootings. Yet, if you listen to politicians and media, the real threat of AI is a fantastical scenario where it might wipe out humans in ten years. They need to stop getting fooled by tech deceivers.

What we see in LLM use is helpfully illuminated by comparison to how Marx describes the way we encounter commodities in capitalism. When you buy something, you generally meet it as a finished product, which you buy because you want to use it. It appears in an abstract way, on a shelf (or website).

I agree with your metaphor, if it even really is one. It just seems like the logical conclusion of commodity fetishism to make a fake human brain a product that obscures its relations as well. Wallace Shawn's once obscure play has taken on quite a life on the Internet with this part..
