In the mood for wild garlic in everything just now, it's so fresh and green and looks and tastes like spring. Picked a bunch this afternoon and I've just stirred some into my lunchtime bowl of tomato soup. Gives most things a bit of a lift, unless of course you dislike garlic.

Thinking of blues that grace my garden for #GardensHour and I always come back to The Blue Pot. It’s big enough for me to climb inside and sit down (should I ever want to) and I absolutely love it. Blue is my favourite colour. #BlueMonday

Cherry plum in flower against a blue sky. Great to see these first signs of spring.

Delighted to get a start made on the garden today, even though I could hardly move because of the five layers of clothes I was wearing. Social media reminded me earlier that this day last year there was snow lying four inches thick on my patio table. Not gardening weather at all.

Carrot, cumin and ginger soup with the first of the wild garlic. The leaves are still tiny and the flavour is very subtle, but it still feels like a taste of spring.

Goodnight from Fay Walker, preparing a merciless curse for all those who use the tower block lift as a public urinal. Goodnight from the ghosts of the Weychester University Caving Club, continuously hoping for rescue from the Worm’s Hole since 1949. Goodnight from Hookland.

Doing the dry January thing. Started a week late but January has five weeks this year, as if four wasn't plenty. Not much fun so far, but then nor is January. The year's bullying firstborn, to be followed by drab little February, the runt of the litter.

I have to say GoFundMe really puts me off. Personally I find it hard to think of a scenario where I'd ask complete strangers for money. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with asking strangers for money, and unforeseen situations can happen to us all. It's just not for me.

Goodnight from Amber Soans, humming old mere tithe songs as she sews flags for the upcoming Empress Eel parade. Goodnight from Maxine Till, sure her great-grandmother’s portrait photo has changed its expression as a sign that her new lover is wrong ’un. Goodnight from Hookland.

A winter wreath I made this afternoon. The ivy berries aren’t quite ripe yet and the oranges are leftovers from Christmas but I love the dark, rich tones of late winter evergreen foliage.

Presents all wrapped and ready to pack, just need to glaze and bake the ham, make panna cotta for the Christmas Eve party, bath the dogs and do my nails and that’s me sorted for tomorrow. I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas.

Today my favourite greengrocer had padron peppers, or what I once saw described on the menu of an actual tapas restaurant as 'pardon peppers' - I love me a typo. Anyway, I bought some. A tip: if you're gonna cook pardon peppers at home, switch off the smoke alarm and open a few windows.

I keep chuckling over a bit from Mitford's 'Love in a Cold Climate': the parents refuse to explain what Oscar Wilde was convicted of, so young Bob says he'll find out when he goes to Eton.

Pecan, pear and cranberry upside down cake…

It's about time there were fresh cranberries in the shops. No, it's not too early - I want to make the pear, pecan and cranberry upside down cake from Diana Henry's 'Roast Figs, Sugar Snow'. And it's not too early for the family sized boxes of Tunnock's Teacakes either, I have one home with me.

The garden just now. The forecast promised fog but I seem to have my own microclimate up here. Winter’s still got novelty value but by the time the new year comes I’ll be ready to flee the country.

Word of the day, though I’m sure no one will need it, is ‘eye servant’ (16th century): an individual who only pays attention or works hard when the boss is looking.

Etymology of the day: to be ‘blowing a hoolie’ (or ‘hooley’) was probably inspired by the Orkney word ‘hoolan’, a howling gale, with a touch of the ‘hooley’ that is a very noisy party thrown in.

The original ‘tosspot’, in the 16th century, was someone who ‘tossed back’ their ‘pot’ of beer and then immediately went back for another.

Actually I won't be all that sorry to see #StormBert. The snow has moved on to make way for the inevitable rain and it's freezing. Both dogs have cabin fever and it's too cold for H as she's not really able to run to warm up. I'll be glad of the warmer temperatures. Winter sucks.
