Carlos Bernier of Puerto Rico was born 99 year ago today. He usually doesn’t get the credit he deserves for his role in baseball’s integration, specifically with the Pirates. He had a long career in Puerto Rico (where he is a HOFer) and the minors, with at least 3,563 pro hits, 264 HR, and 896 SB.

Lobby cards for DESERT NIGHTS, a proto-noir, nasty, sweaty silent crime picture. Not quite as harsh as it probably should have been (this was MGM and not Lon Chaney) but excellent atmosphere

Have: 1. 1967 Topps commons; 2. also, big mix of early-ish junk wax. (If any prospects, I’ll need to open some boxes & dig so to take pics.) Wants: any *weird* error card of old Orioles. I.e., color shift, card back printed on front, or extreme miscuts from early junk wax or prior. Poor is fine!

Funny how in this interview Fran remembers publishing it under a different name (not as Jim Conway) but "under the name of the headmaster who threw me out of prep school, Robert Paine Cook," which sounds even better. colophon.com/privatelibra....

Wife brought her 100 year old film camera to that pirates game from a few weeks ago and she got this shot that's just perfect

A black and white photo of a baseball game, you can see that it is mid pitch with a pirate at bat

Have: 1. several 1967 Topps commons; 2. also, big mix of early-ish junk wax. Wants: willing to trade for almost any very weird color shift error cards or extreme miscuts from early junk wax or prior—big plus if it’s Orioles! (If any prospects, I’ll need to open some boxes & dig so to take pics.)

From Internet Archive: “one of the rarest nineteenth-century baseball books…, with probably fewer than six copies known…. Issued just two years after the Civil War, the sixteen-page volume lampoons baseball's reputation for roughness in the 1860s”—and w/ progressively worsening player injuries.

Sad to hear about the passing of acting legend Robert Redford. Before he was a member of the New York Knights, photographer Steve Schapiro captured Redford playing baseball in Central Park with his son and daughter.

Good one. But fully prepared for @nytimes.com to actually publish such dreck. (We unsubscribed from that clickbait org.) Satire is an endangered species in this era.

Given that backstory, it’s hard not to see another kind of haunting in this artwork.
