Fabulous panoramic photos of the Cubs’ home West Side Grounds (WSG) can be found on the covers of Deadball Stars of the American League and Deadball Stars of the National League, depicting scenes from 1908 (just below) and 1907 (2nd from top), respectively. This ballpark was home to the Chicago NL club from 1893 through 1915.

New find in the SABR-Rucker collection. Hugh Duffy informs Joe Ferrin that he has been released by the Portland, ME, team on hotel stationery. The Fall River Daily reported the release the next day. Ferrin’s Sporting New Player Contract Card shows him with multiple teams in 1913.

Learned there are two versions of the 1877 Boston Red Stockings trade card. The rarely seen one has Harry Wright in the second row in the middle. The more commonly seen one in the History of the Boston Base Ball Club book has Jack Manning in the bottom right. Find both in the SABR-Rucker Collection.

It is said that Branch Rickey's (top left) mission to integrate baseball started in 1903 as the baseball coach at Wesleyan University, when his student Charles Thomas (center) was seen trying to scratch away his skin after being denied a hotel room based on his color.

In the early days of photography, it was important for the subject to stand still so the photograph would not come out blurry. Notice the stand behind Tim Murnane on this 1874 cabinet card. He was able to lean on it to help him stay still.

On April 11, 1950, the Dallas Eagles opened the Texas League Season vs. the Tulsa Oilers. Eagles manager Charlie Grimm brought in 7 HOFers. Dizzy Dean, Mickey Cochrane, Charlie Gehringer, Tris Speaker, Ty Cobb, Grimm, Duffy Lewis, Home Run Baker, and Travis Jackson for an old-timers game.
