In the wake of 9/11, Congress passed the FirstNet Authority statute with the goal of creating a nationwide broadband network, so that first responders could communicate with each other at any place, no matter what network they used. Now, that authority is set to expire.

Today, @chrismurphyct.bsky.social introduced the “In Real Life Act” to curb the harms of engagement-driven social media and invest in community infrastructure. The bill would tax digital advertising on algorithmic social media and use the revenues for a Social Capital Fund.

Pretty amazing to me that one of the first moves from Trump II was an executive order "ending federal censorship", and in the ~20 months since, the admin tramples on 1A rights every chance it gets. What's also remarkable is how events like these expose the lack of understanding of 1A

Reports indicate that a group of 12 state attorneys general resolved its antitrust lawsuit against Paramount/Skydance to halt its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery. The suit alleged that the merger would cause serious harm to competition, raise prices, & reduce quality film and TV content.

When the phones wouldn't work here in DC on 9/11 (overwhelmed, I expect), it occurred to me this was exactly the kind of situation email was designed for. I was able to let my folks know I was OK, coordinate with my wife in Shady Grove, and get my son from daycare.
